Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Park Maintenance Supervisor, the employee performs maintenance duties and upkeep of grounds, recreational facilities, and buildings. The employee performs repairs and preventative maintenance on facilities and performs grounds maintenance with turf and shrubs. Employee operates light equipment and provides manual labor for the completion of projects. Employee receives specific detailed instructions from supervisor. Work is performed under established procedures with frequent inspections during progress with a final inspection of completed work. Employee performs routine maintenance inspections on assigned equipment, notifies supervisor of equipment failures, and may assist with repairs. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug screens.

Essential Functions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Park and Grounds Maintenance. Performs duties in maintaining and preparing City parks and recreation athletic fields and grounds for use. Receives assignments and instructions from supervisors. Inspects playground equipment and athletic fields for proper maintenance and adherence to prescribed safety standards. Prepares athletic fields for play to include dragging fields, removing debris and painting field and bases. Works athletic tournaments to include picking up and removing trash and debris; cleaning and restocking bathrooms; and empty trash and replace liners. Places equipment on field for play (e.g., soccer goals, bases, etc.). Operates irrigation system and grounds machinery. Maintains trees, flowers, and shrubs; fertilizes, prunes, treats with insecticides and herbicides as needed. Maintains all shrub and flowerbeds; spreads chips, sprays insecticides and fungicides, pulls and sprays for weeds. Maintains ornamental grass, mows using specialized turf tractor or push mowers, edges, top dresses, sprays insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides. Mows and edges grass for athletic playing fields. Prepares athletic fields by striping and marking appropriately. Maintains recreation park facilities; picks up litter, empties trash cans. Installs new mulch at park and other facilities. Cleans up after games or any other event that may have another event following. Pressure washes outside facilities and sidewalks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Building Maintenance. Performs duties to maintain City park and recreation facilities. Changes or repairs all types of lighting. Paints building interiors and exteriors. Assists other maintenance workers to complete renovations and remodeling. Repairs, replaces, and unstops commodes and replaces faucets as needed. Sweeps out and cleans concession stands, press boxes, and dug outs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Equipment. Operates and maintains small equipment to accomplish assigned tasks. Performs minor repairs on equipment. Drives and operates light equipment for the Department, including tractor/mower and light truck. Maintains parks and rights-of-way (ROW) by mowing grass, edging, and trimming bushes and trees. Operates small engine power tools including lawn mowers, chain saws, concrete saw, leaf vacuum and blower, and weed eaters. Loads and unloads materials and equipment. Assists with maintenance, as assigned. Performs pre-work safety inspections of assigned equipment. Performs preventative maintenance on assigned equipment. Ensures assigned vehicles and equipment are properly fueled. Reports the need for equipment repairs to supervisor. Performs work or may assist supervisor or other repairmen with minor mechanical repairs. Drives City vehicles to job sites.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Moves furniture and performs event setup for scheduled activities. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (* Can be acquired on the job) *Knowledge of City rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. *Knowledge of City geography and park locations. Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations for safe use of chemicals and equipment. Knowledge of painting techniques and procedures. Knowledge of the materials, methods, practices, and equipment used in building maintenance. Knowledge of the preventative maintenance techniques and requirements for buildings and equipment. Knowledge of basic horticulture and landscaping practices and techniques. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules including accident causation and prevention. Reading skills to comprehend operator manuals, directives, procedures, and instructions. Verbal skills to communicate effectively with supervisor and co-workers. Math skills to perform basic calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide). Hand-eye skills to properly operate cleaning equipment and use basic hand tools. Skill in maintaining plants, sod, and shrubbery. Ability to understand both oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, administrative staff, and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively with supervision, co-workers, and the general public. Ability to deal with the public in a courteous manner. Ability to perform strenuous work and lifting requiring freedom of bodily movement and conditioning. Ability to organize and multi-task. Ability to use hand tools and equipment. Ability to use personal protective equipment as required. Ability to work independently or part of a work group. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to work in a stressful environment. Ability to push carts, carry trashcans, and move furniture for cleaning. Ability to climb ladders. Ability to drive.
Minimum Qualifications: Ability to read and write. Minimum of six (6) months of work experience using and operating hand and power tools in building maintenance; six (6) months of grounds maintenance experience; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities commensurate with the requirements of this job. Possess a current and valid driver's license; must be insurable. Ability to work non-standard hours. Ability to travel throughout the City to various recreation centers. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screening.
Physical Demands
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching, or crawling in restricted areas.
