Job Title:ย  AssistantCoach

Reports to:ย  Principal or designee

Job Summary:ย  Promotes the development of character, leadership, cooperation and respect for others that will make the participant a better citizen. Develops athletic skills of students interested in competitive sports activities.

Essential Job Functions:

I.ย  PROFESSIONAL & PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • Submits participant lists, equipment needs, program information and other designated information prior to season.
  • Follows policy in the athletic handbook and meets all criteria as outlined in job description.
  • Develops rapport with and demonstrates effective management of the coaching staff.
  • Is appropriately dressed at the practice and games.
  • Participates in in-service meetings and other activities to improve coaching performance.
  • Attends meetings of the athletic department.
  • Develops sound public relations.ย  Cooperates with newspapers, radio, television, booster club and interested spectators.
  • Understands and follows rules and regulations set forth by all governing agencies: state association, school district and league.
  • Participates in parent's night, banquets, award nights, pep assemblies and letters to colleges regarding players.
  • Maintains appropriate sideline conduct at games with respect to players, officials and other workers.
  • Develops rapport with other teachers, coaches, administrators and support staff.
  • Works cooperatively with middle school coaches in developing a coordinated program.
  • Promotes all sports in the athletic program attempting to foster school spirit.
  • Cooperates and communicates with parents during the entire year.
  • Works cooperatively with the athletics administrator.
  • Helps students and parents see the relationship between athletics and character development:

II.ย  COACHING PERFORMANCE:

  • Provides training rules to team members in writing and follows due process procedures.
  • Develops respect by example in appearance, manners, behavior, language and conduct during a contest.
  • Provides proper supervision and administration of locker and training room and on bus trips.
  • Is well versed and knowledgeable in matters pertaining to the sport.
  • Has individual and team discipline and control.
  • Develops a well-organized practice schedule which utilizes his/her staff and team to its maximum potential.
  • Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by the staff.
  • Holds periodic staff meetings, including middle school coaches to implement the above.
  • Develops integrity within the coaching staff, fellow coaches and works to make better coaches.
  • Demonstrates fairness, understanding, tolerance, sympathy and patience with team members.
  • Uses new coaching techniques and ideas in addition to sound, already proven methods of coaching.
  • Arrives at practices and games on time.
  • Shows an interest in athletes in off-season activities and classroom efforts.
  • Provides leadership and attitudes that produce positive efforts by participants.
  • Knows the medical aspects of the position, including first aid, injury policies.ย  Works with a trainer and/or family physician.
  • Stresses conditioning, physical fitness and injury prevention.
  • Provides an atmosphere of cooperation in being receptive to suggestions and giving credit to those responsible for success.
  • Uses ethical means of motivation and emphasizes values of competitive athletics, acceptable personal behavior and decision-making.
  • Utilizes practice time for both individual and team development.
  • Develops team performance consistent with athletes' abilities.

III.ย  RELATED COACHING RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cares for equipment, including issue, collection, inventory and storage.
  • Is cooperative in developing non-league schedules and securing officials.
  • Is cooperative in sharing facilities and working with maintenance personnel.
  • Shows self-control and poise in areas related to coaching responsibilities.
  • Displays enthusiasm and exhibits interest in coaching.
  • Keeps the athletic administrator informed about events.
  • Is cooperative in helping service clubs, the booster club, recreation department and other organizations in their projects which in turn relate to the athletic program.
  • Encourages all potential athletes to participate in sport programs.
  • Follows proper procedure for purchase of equipment.
  • Operates sport within the budget.
  • Responsible for being familiar with the school/district policies and procedures which govern the work.
  • Prompt and regular attendance is required.

Other Job Functions:

  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Participates in various meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skills/knowledge.

Essential Job Requirements - Qualifications:

  • Allergic Reaction Training required.
  • Hepatitis Training required.
  • First Aid Certification required.
  • Coaches certification training preferred.
  • Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Previous successful playing/coaching experience in assigned sport.
  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and ability to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • Valid Oregon Teaching License recommended.
  • Employed as a teacher with McMinnville School District preferred.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and harmoniously as a team member.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and work without close supervision.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District personnel and the public.
  • Maintains confidential information and the privacy of District staff, students, and families.
  • Carries out work responsibilities effectively under pressure of deadlines, interruptions, and new or emergency situations.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Ability to respect confidential information.
  • Computer skills to include use of word processing programs, database programs and the Google Suite of products.ย
