BACKGROUND
Pictona is a world-class pickleball facility located in Holly Hill, Florida (part of the greater Daytona Beach area). Pictona includes 49 pickleball courts, 13 of which are covered, including a championship court that seats 1200. It also includes an activity center, locker rooms, player shop, and a restaurant called the Kitchen.
The Director of Player Development will lead and coordinate the instructional programs of Pictona’s Player Development department. The duties include the development of courses for players, instructors, and administrators as well as the teaching of the same. Those duties are further described below. The full-time position reports to Pictona’s Director.
DUTIES
- Coordinate the existing instructional programs offered now at Pictona.
- Review the courses, clinics, and workshops offered.
- Work with our current instructors to deliver successful instruction.
- Develop and oversee marketing plans for our current instructional programs, working with Pictona’s Marketing Director to execute the plans.
- Plan new training courses and workshops for players, instructors, and administrators.
- Learn what training programs exist across the country.
- Determine the need for specific training programs.
- Prepare proposals for specific training courses, which include a full description of the training experience.
- Complete a marketing and financial plan for each course proposed.
- Have courses approved by Pictona’s Director.
- Recruit, train, and oversee instructors.
- Determine the qualifications needed for each course taught.
- Identify and recruit qualified instructors.
- Ensure that instructors receive the training needed to teach each course.
- Evaluate instructors’ teaching and take corrective action if the teaching is inadequate.
- Teach courses when qualified to do so and time permits.
- Observe lessons regularly and ensure instructors follow the established curriculum.
- Coach instructors on delivery and teaching quality, and take corrective action to prevent inconsistent or “rogue” instruction.
- Enforce instructor dress and professionalism standards.
- Maintain records of instructor certification and insurance, and verify that all instructors are current before they teach.
- Coordinate the preparation of course materials.
- See that each course has a comprehensive syllabus.
- Oversee the development of all resources needed to teach the course.
- Pilot test the course and make needed adjustments.
- Administer Pictona’s Camps for youth and adults.
- Expand the offering of the camps.
- Plan and recruit instructors for our youth camps.
- Plan, market, and administer the adult camps.
- Maintain separate standards for junior programming, distinct from adult beginner classes where appropriate, and ensure background-check compliance for all junior-facing staff.
- Teach Pictona’s courses.
- As time permits, teach Pictona’s courses.
- Offer private instruction to Pictona’s members.
- Lead the design, launch, and execution of Pictona’s instructional pathway.
- Build and launch the beginner pathway, including 101, 102, and 103 courses, and beginner clinics
- Expand the pathway into junior, intermediate, and advanced levels over time.
- Ensure students know what comes next after each class, connecting instruction to broader community participation and membership conversion.
- Oversee the implementation of the marketing plan for all courses.
- Identify target markets for each course.
- Work with the Marketing Director to develop the marketing plan.
- Oversee the execution of the plan.
- Oversee the financials for the instructional courses.
- Develop financial plans for each course.
- Determine the costs to be invested in developing a course.
- Set the price for each course and determine its profitability.
- Help shape the broader financial model for the division, including class pricing, the staffing model, and the relative profitability of group instruction versus private lessons.
OPERATING EXPECTATIONS
- Enforce instructor dress and professionalism standards consistently across all programming.
- Use Pictona’s systems and processes consistently, including Court Reserve, and follow up with students where needed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Currently there are no employees to directly supervise. Instead, the Director of Player Development will recruit and oversee contracted instructors to teach Pictona courses. Also, some of the tasks performed as Director of Player Development are completed collaboratively with other Pictona staff.
SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE
- Strong pickleball knowledge and playing ability, combined with strong teaching, and instructional design; this role is not for a strong player alone.
- Ability to organize curriculum, write lesson plans, develop instructors, and assess whether instruction is effective.
- Ability to demonstrate drills and execute the on-court skills needed for instruction credibly.
- RPO certification preferred; an equivalent certification is acceptable if the candidate can implement the RPO methodology, or a comparable consistent facility-wide instructional methodology.
- Familiarity with DUPR or similar player rating systems, and comfort assessing instructor playing ability, preferred (a specific DUPR rating is not required).
- Ability to conceptualize courses and curricular materials.
- Superior teacher of pickleball skills and tactics.
- Knowledge of pickleball and existing pickleball instructional programs.
- Ability to guide others in developing course materials.
- Excellent organizational, time-management writing and editing skills.
- Good leadership skills with the ability to motivate staff and volunteers.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Experience building structured sports development programs.
- Experience hiring, evaluating, and mentoring instructors.
- Experience with junior programming, camps, clinics, and pathway-based player development.
