What is a platform?

Platform jobs refer to roles that focus on building, maintaining, and optimizing technology platforms—these are foundational systems or services that support applications, products, or business operations. Common examples include platform engineers, platform architects, and platform managers. Professionals in these roles work to ensure scalability, reliability, and performance of underlying infrastructure, enabling other teams to build and deploy software efficiently. Their responsibilities often include automation, monitoring, security, and continuous integration/deployment. These roles are critical in organizations that rely on cloud computing, microservices, or large-scale systems.

How does a platform engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams?

Platform Engineers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between development and operations teams by building and maintaining the underlying infrastructure, tools, and automation that enable smooth software delivery. They often work closely with developers to understand application requirements, help automate deployment processes, and ensure reliable system performance. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as Platform Engineers may support troubleshooting, infrastructure optimization, and security compliance efforts across teams. This collaborative environment fosters a culture of shared responsibility for the reliability and scalability of the entire technology stack.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a platform engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Platform Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, systems architecture, and infrastructure management, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), containerization tools (like Docker and Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and communication skills help engineers work effectively with cross-functional teams and address complex technical challenges. These combined skills are essential for building reliable, scalable platforms that support business needs and ensure seamless software delivery.

With extensive experience, deep knowledge and worldwide presence across financial markets, we enable businesses and economies around the world to fund innovation, manage risk and create jobs. It's how we've contributed to supporting the financial stability and growth of communities and economies globally for more than 300 years.
This is an exceptional opportunity to join a high impact engineering team responsible for developing and evolving the LOCP platform, a strategic technology enabling the migration of flagship real time systems onto an advanced, cutting-edge container platform designed for ultra-low latency, high throughput, and resilience.
You will be working at the forefront of platform engineering, contributing to the design, implementation, and evolution of enterprise scale infrastructure and platform capabilities that operate at extraordinary scale.
We are looking for engineers who thrive in fast moving and technically complex environments, enjoy solving difficult engineering challenges, and are passionate about building world class platform solutions. This role provides the opportunity to work with newer technologies while collaborating with highly skilled and supportive colleagues across multiple engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
As a Lead Engineer, you will:

  • Lead the design, development, and evolution of LOCP platform capabilities across development, test, and production environments.
  • Build, enhance, and maintain platform services using Infrastructure as Code, automation, and engineering best practices.
  • Contribute to platform architecture decisions and technology roadmaps, ensuring solutions align with strategic objectives and engineering standards.
Reliability & Operational Excellence
  • Champion Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles across the platform, driving improvements in reliability, availability, resilience, and scalability.
  • Implement and improve service observability through metrics, logging, tracing, dashboards, alerting, and operational tooling.
  • Support incident analysis, root cause investigations, and continuous improvement activities to reduce operational risk and improve service quality.
Technical Leadership & Collaboration
  • Act as a technical leader within the team, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to engineers across the platform organisation.
  • Partner with architecture, product, security, infrastructure, and application teams to deliver platform capabilities aligned with business needs.
  • Promote a culture of engineering excellence, collaboration, continuous learning, and innovation.
Ways of Working
  • Operate effectively within agile and iterative delivery models.
  • Manage multiple priorities in a dynamic and evolving environment.
  • Drive high quality engineering standards including testing, documentation, peer review, and automation.
  • Advocate for platform quality, reliability, supportability, and long-term maintainability.
Qualifications & Experience
Core Technical Skills (Primary Focus)
While candidates do not need deep expertise across every area, we are particularly interested in engineers who demonstrate advanced expertise in at least two or three of the following domains:
  • Building and operating Kubernetes-based platforms in enterprise or large-scale production environments.
  • Infrastructure as Code experience, particularly with Terraform.
  • Experience applying Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles, including service reliability, automation, observability, incident management, and operational excellence.
  • Experience designing and implementing observability solutions using metrics, logging, tracing, alerting, and dashboarding technologies.
  • Strong software engineering skills with Go (Golang), including development of platform services, automation tooling, APIs, or operators.
  • Solid Linux systems knowledge, including troubleshooting, performance analysis, and platform operations; experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git-based workflows, and modern software delivery practices.
Lead Engineers with expertise in multiple subject areas and a willingness to broaden their knowledge across the remaining areas will thrive in this role.
Soft Skills
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical collaborators.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical discussions and influence engineering outcomes.
  • Collaborative mindset with a passion for mentoring and knowledge sharing.
  • Comfortable working within complex environments with evolving priorities and challenges.
