We are seeking a highly organized and motivated individual to join our structural steel fabrication and erection team as the Assistant to the Director of Structural Steel Detailing. In this role, you will support project coordination, documentation, and communication while gaining exposure to industry‑leading software such as Tekla Structures and Bluebeam Revu. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys learning, thrives in a detail‑focused environment, and is interested in growing into a Structural Steel Detailer over time.

An effective Assistant to the Director of Detailing is a detail-oriented person who provides direct support to the Director while proactively following a structured career path toward becoming a Structural Steel Detailer, then Detailing Coordinator and potentially Detailing Manager. This role is the first step into management and requires a reliable, competent, and motivated individual who is eager to learn, communicates well, is willing to take on various tasks, and strives to continuously improve and develop their skills.

  • Organize project files, drawing packages, and maintain documentation using Microsoft 365 Suite (Teams, Excel, Word, Outlook). o Assist with tracking project timelines and deliverables.
  • Project Coordination o Prepare reports and status updates for detailing projects.
  • Assist in compiling material lists, BOMs, and shipping documentation.
  • Technical Exposure and Training o Learn and assist with basic tasks in Tekla Structures, Trimble tools, and Bluebeam Revu.
  • Support quality checks on drawings and erection documentation under supervision.
  • Potential Progression Path and Performance Milestones. This progression path offers a vision of how the role may develop over time. It is meant to provide general direction and highlight possible growth opportunities. The path is intentionally flexible and will very likely be adapted based on the employees’ growth, the evolution of team goals, and the refining and improvement of the company’s processes.

    Phase 1 — Assistant to the Director (Months 0–12)

    Purpose of this Phase

    Build a dependable foundation in organization, communication, and core tools so the Director can operate smoothly, and the Assistant becomes familiar with the detailing environment and steel construction.

    What Success Looks Like
  • Demonstrates working proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Teams, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint). by month 1.
  • Completes introductory Tekla Structures training and can perform basic navigation and simple tasks.
  • Becomes proficient in Bluebeam Revu (markups, tracking changes) by months 36.
  • Understands the basics of AISC/AWS standards and can read blueprints with confidence.
  • Becomes familiar with Bountiful Detailing standards.
  • Assists with coordination and review of 3rd party trade drawings, i.e. Mechanical, Precast, Joist and Deck, etc.
  • Milestones to Move to Phase 2

  • Completes training requirements.
  • Can walk through drawings and explain what they’re seeing.
  • Begins contributing small technical tasks independently.
  • Phase 2 — Structural Steel Detailer Trainee (Months 12–24)

    Purpose of this Phase

    Start building technical detailing skills with close supervision and gradually increase responsibility.

    What Success Looks Like
  • Creates basic shop drawings and erection drawings with minimal corrections.
  • Has produced fabrication packages for production, including all reports and files necessary for at least two projects
  • Communicates effectively with engineers, project managers, fabricators, and erectors.
  • Can interpret architectural and structural drawings accurately.
  • Milestones to Move to Phase 3

  • Completes at least two detailing assignments from start to finish with acceptable accuracy.
  • Shows consistent improvement in drawing quality and reduced correction needs.
  • Demonstrates dependable follow through and timely communication.
  • Phase 3 — Structural Steel Detailer (Months 24–48)

    Purpose of this Phase

    Work independently on detailing assignments and contribute to overall project quality and throughput.

  • Independently produces complete shop and erection drawing sets for multiple projects.
  • Performs quality checks using company standards and industry codes.
  • Coordinates directly with internal and external project teams.
  • Begins assisting with training or guiding junior team members.
