What is a platform engineer?

A platform engineer writes code that bridges the gap between software and hardware and tests the system so that it runs effectively and smoothly. In this career, you are a vital part of the software and hardware industries. You run diagnostics tests to verify the correct design of hardware, which usually means writing code for manufacturing diagnostics so that the testing of the hardware takes place automatically. The qualifications needed for a career as a platform engineer include a bachelor’s degree in computer science or an associate’s degree and relevant work experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a platform engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Platform Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, systems architecture, and cloud infrastructure, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with containerization tools (like Docker and Kubernetes), infrastructure-as-code platforms (such as Terraform), and cloud services (AWS, Azure, or GCP) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Strong problem-solving skills, collaboration, and effective communication help Platform Engineers drive reliability and innovation within technical teams. These competencies are crucial for building scalable, secure, and efficient platforms that support an organization's technology needs.

How does a platform engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams?

Platform Engineers work closely with both development and operations teams to design, build, and maintain scalable infrastructure and deployment pipelines. They often serve as a bridge, ensuring that applications can be deployed reliably and efficiently while meeting the requirements of both teams. Regular communication is key, as Platform Engineers gather feedback from developers about tooling needs and coordinate with operations to uphold system stability and security. This collaborative environment fosters automation, streamlines workflows, and supports continuous delivery practices.

What is the difference between Platform Engineer vs DevOps Engineer?

AspectPlatform EngineerDevOps Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in CS or related field, often cloud certificationsBachelor's in CS, DevOps certifications (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
Work EnvironmentDesigning and building platform infrastructure, working with cloud servicesAutomating deployment, CI/CD pipelines, and system operations
Industry UsageTech companies, cloud providers, SaaS firmsSoftware development, IT operations, cloud services

Platform Engineers focus on creating and maintaining the underlying infrastructure and platforms, while DevOps Engineers streamline development and deployment processes through automation. Both roles collaborate closely but have distinct focuses within the software development lifecycle.

Do platform engineers make good money?

Platform engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. In many regions, they can expect to earn above-average wages, especially with skills in cloud computing, automation, and scripting. Certifications and expertise in tools like Kubernetes or AWS can also positively impact earning potential.

Job description

Platform Engineer
Location: New York, NY
Work Style: In-office
Employment Type: Full-time
About Our Client
Our client is building an AI-native infrastructure platform that helps engineering teams investigate, resolve, and prevent production issues faster. Their product is designed to give engineers time back by automating the operational work that slows teams down and keeps them away from building great products.
This is an opportunity to join a fast-moving startup building at the intersection of infrastructure, AI agents, developer tooling, service reliability, and enterprise-grade integrations.
About the Role
Our client is hiring a Platform Engineer to own the foundational systems that power product engineering velocity, service infrastructure, and the connectivity layer between AI agents and customer environments.
This role is core to how the company ships. You'll build and operate the systems behind every agent invocation, every customer onboarding workflow, and every internal engineering process. This includes internal admin tooling, deployment and observability pipelines, integration infrastructure, MCP gateway systems, and the platform primitives that help customers get value in days instead of weeks.
You'll partner closely with product, field engineering, and research teams. Your work will compound across every team building on top of the platform.
What You'll Do
  • Build platform systems that accelerate engineering velocity across the company
  • Own internal admin tooling, CI/CD, deployment pipelines, dev/demo environments, and AI-native engineering workflows
  • Build and maintain core service infrastructure across Kubernetes, observability, shared libraries, secret management, and deployment abstractions
  • Set the standard for what "production-ready" means across the engineering organization
  • Own data infrastructure that supports evaluations, experimentation, agent behavior, customer telemetry, resource graphs, and investigation traces
  • Design clean schemas, storage patterns, and access layers that keep critical product data reliable and usable
  • Build and operate the connectivity layer between agents and customer environments
  • Own MCP gateway systems, OAuth, credential management, customer integrations, API routing, and self-hosted server lifecycle
  • Improve reliability, security, and enterprise trust across multi-tenant integration systems
  • Create platform tooling that is adopted and loved by both engineers and AI agents

What We're Looking For
  • 3+ years of experience in platform, infrastructure, backend, or systems engineering
  • Strong experience with service-oriented architecture, networking, and distributed systems
  • Ability to reason clearly about how data, traffic, and failures move through complex systems
  • Strong TypeScript experience
  • Hands-on experience operating production services on Kubernetes
  • Experience taking ambiguous technical goals from prototype to production
  • Strong code quality and data modeling skills
  • Product-minded approach to platform engineering
  • Ability to build tooling that improves the day-to-day experience of engineers
  • Comfort using AI aggressively in personal engineering workflows
  • High ownership, strong communication, and a bias toward building

Bonus Experience
  • Experience with MCP, OAuth, API gateways, or multi-tenant integration platforms
  • Experience with OTEL, distributed tracing, Datadog, observability, or SRE best practices
  • Experience building internal admin tools or developer tooling
  • Experience building systems used by both humans and AI agents
  • Experience with LLM systems, agent tooling, context management, tool use, or sandboxing

Who Thrives Here
The right person is a builder who enjoys owning foundational systems in a fast-paced startup environment. They think in systems, care deeply about reliability and developer experience, and enjoy creating leverage for every engineer around them.
This person is excited to work in person with an ambitious, thoughtful team in New York and is energized by zero-to-one product development, rapid iteration, and AI-native engineering.
Why This Opportunity
  • Build foundational platform systems at an AI-native infrastructure company
  • Own work that directly impacts product velocity, customer onboarding, and agent reliability
  • Partner closely with product, research, and field engineering teams
  • Work on hard problems across Kubernetes, observability, integrations, data infrastructure, MCP, and AI agent connectivity
  • Join a high-ownership startup environment with meaningful technical scope
  • Help define the platform layer that every product and engineering team builds on top of

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive salary and meaningful equity
  • Fully covered health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Retirement benefits
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Dinner covered on late nights
  • Monthly fitness stipend
  • Equipment and tools needed to do your best work
  • Commuter benefits, including Citi Bike and train benefits

Interview Process
  • Application review
  • Introductory conversation
  • Founder interview
  • Technical interview
  • Onsite interviews with the team
  • Final decision

Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a platform-minded engineer who loves building infrastructure that other engineers depend on. They have strong backend and systems fundamentals, care about reliability and developer experience, and are excited to build the connective tissue between AI agents, customer environments, and production infrastructure.
