Job description

MUSIC DIRECTOR

Colorado Springs, CO 80907

Overview

Full-Time | Trace Church | 3,500+ Weekly Attendance

Vision & Calling

At Trace Church, we believe worship is more than music — it is spiritual formation, discipleship, and leadership development expressed through song and surrendered lives.

The Music Director is more than a band leader; this leader develops musicians, shapes musical culture, and strengthens the musical foundation of every worship gathering. The Music Director builds systems that help instrumentalists grow in their craft, culture, character, and relationship with Christ so that congregational worship is supported with excellence and intentionality.

We believe we are not paid for performance, but for preparation. The Music Director models musical excellence, spiritual health, personal discipline, and relational maturity so that the ministry never outpaces the leader.

Music Director Position Overview

The Music Director leads and develops the worship band across all services and environments at Trace Church. This role is responsible for:

  • Recruiting and developing musicians.
  • Empowering and resourcing musicians across ministries.
  • Resourcing songs and band arrangements.
  • Building and maintaining a healthy culture among musicians.
  • Support worship leaders in creating Christ-centered gatherings.
  • Ensuring musical excellence and consistency across services.

The Music Director helps steward the sound of multiple worship centers while developing musicians who are spiritually grounded, technically excellent, and relationally healthy.

Primary Responsibilities

Spiritual & Pastoral Leadership
  • Lead musicians spiritually by modeling a Christ-centered life on and off the platform.
  • Support the discipleship and development of musicians alongside the Worship Pastor.
  • Encourage growth in character, humility, and spiritual maturity within the team.
  • Establish rhythms of prayer, devotion, and spiritual growth in band environments.
  • Help cultivate a culture of honor, unity, and biblical conflict resolution.
Recruitment & Team Building
  • Proactively recruit instrumentalists with strong potential and calling.
  • Oversee audition processes with excellence and clarity.
  • Build and maintain a sustainable pipeline of developing musicians.
  • Identify and develop key instrumental leaders within the team.
  • Ensure the worship team is equipped to support growth and multiple services.
  • Develop bench strength for future campuses, ministries and expansion.
Music Development (Craft, Culture, Character & Christ)
  • Craft
    • Train musicians in tone, dynamics, musical sensitivity, and arrangement awareness.
    • Develop proficiency on primary instruments within a band environment.
    • Coach musicians in playing with tracks, click, and large-room dynamics.
    • Lead rehearsals with clear direction and intentional feedback.
    • Develop musicians’ understanding of arrangement flow and worship dynamics.
  • Culture
    • Shape a band culture marked by humility, unity, honor, and excellence.
    • Establish clear expectations for preparation and professionalism.
    • Reinforce that platform ministry flows from private devotion.
    • Create an environment where musicians embrace feedback and growth.
  • Character
    • Model integrity, servanthood, and emotional health.
    • Develop musicians who prioritize spiritual maturity before platform readiness.
    • Provide consistent mentorship and pastoral support.
  • Relationship with Christ
    • Encourage musicians to cultivate a personal devotional life.
    • Ensure musicians lead from overflow rather than obligation.
    • Foster dependence on prayer and the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Song Resourcing & Arrangement

The Music Director is responsible for preparing and resourcing songs for both the band and worship leaders.

  • Prepare songs in multiple keys to support different worship leaders.
  • Adjust instrumental parts as needed when keys change.
  • Build and manage Ableton sessions and Logic arrangements.
  • Create clear and effective band arrangements that support congregational worship.
  • Ensure musicians have the resources needed to execute songs with confidence.

This role stewards the musical architecture of worship gatherings.

 Musical Leadership & Weekend Execution
  • Direct the band during rehearsals and weekend services.
  • Facilitate clear and effective musical communication between musicians and worship leaders.
  • Maintain stylistic consistency and musical excellence within the band.
  • Troubleshoot musical challenges in real time during rehearsals and services.
  • Shape the overall sound and dynamics of worship gatherings.
Production & Systems Partnership
  • Partner closely with production and technical teams.
  • Ensure tracks, patches, and musical systems are prepared and organized.
  • Coordinate with Planning Center for band scheduling and preparation.
  • Maintain musical consistency across services and special events.
Strategic Leadership & Growth
  • Develop scalable systems for training and developing musicians.
  • Build intentional environments for instrumentalist growth.
  • Prepare and equip musicians for future campus expansion.
  • Collaborate with the Worship Pastor to shape the long-term worship culture.

The goal is to build a ministry that multiplies leaders and musicians beyond a single platform or personality.
