What is a platform automation engineer?

A Platform Automation Engineer is a technology professional who focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining automated systems and tools that streamline the management and deployment of software platforms. Their work often includes creating scripts, implementing infrastructure as code, automating workflows, and ensuring the reliability and scalability of IT environments. These engineers collaborate with development, operations, and QA teams to improve efficiency, reduce manual intervention, and support continuous integration and delivery pipelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a platform automation engineer?

To thrive as a Platform Automation Engineer, you need strong programming skills (typically in Python, Bash, or similar languages), experience with infrastructure-as-code, and a solid understanding of cloud platforms, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like Terraform, Ansible, Jenkins, and container orchestration systems (e.g., Kubernetes) is usually required, along with relevant cloud certifications. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are essential soft skills that set top candidates apart. These competencies enable efficient, reliable automation of infrastructure and deployment processes, ensuring scalability and operational excellence.

What are some typical challenges platform automation engineers face when integrating new automation tools into existing infrastructure?

This is a permanent w-2 position. Hybrid schedule for candidates living in Chicago, NYC, Kansas City, Denver, or Dallas.

Compensation is competitive including base (anticipated in 160-190k +/- range), bonus, equity, comprehensive benefits (medical, dental, vision), 401k, unlimited pto, and more.

The DevOps Engineers primary responsibilities are to develop applications and write code to automate network-related functions, gather telemetry data, develop monitoring and reporting related to network devices and behavior, as well as identify areas that can benefit from automation.

DevOps Engineers are top-level technical contributors with advanced industry knowledge and expertise in automation development, programming, networking, and related hardware and software. Individuals must demonstrate a versatile skill set in a variety of technologies applicable to developing automation for networking infrastructure. This role will specifically focus on deploying automation and analytics to support the network, and to develop custom tools to enable the organization to be more effective.

The networking team supports a large and complex array of devices that require monitoring, telemetry, configuration management and custom analytics. The focus of this position is to create tools and write automation code that enable the organization to more effectively support the enterprise network, resolve problems faster, proactively resolve problems before they become critical, and reduce the amount of network impacting events.

  • Working knowledge with data dashboarding platform (e.g. Grafana)
  • Ability to work in a team environment (including, but not limited to sharing and reusing of existing code, strong documentation, and leveraging Git for code management).
