Plastic Surgery Assistant information

What is a plastic surgery assistant?

Plastic surgery assistants are healthcare professionals who support plastic surgeons during procedures and in the care of patients before, during, and after surgery. Their responsibilities can include preparing patients and operating rooms, assisting during surgeries, handling surgical instruments, and providing post-operative care instructions. They may also help with administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments and maintaining patient records. Plastic surgery assistants work in hospitals, clinics, and private practices, ensuring smooth and safe surgical experiences for patients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a plastic surgery assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Plastic Surgery Assistant, you need a solid understanding of surgical procedures, patient care, and medical terminology, typically supported by a certification such as Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or relevant medical assisting credential. Familiarity with surgical instruments, sterile techniques, and electronic medical records (EMRs) is essential for daily tasks. Strong attention to detail, excellent communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure safe surgeries, effective patient care, and seamless collaboration within the surgical team.

What are some common challenges faced by plastic surgery assistants in a clinical setting?

Plastic Surgery Assistants often navigate a fast-paced environment where attention to detail is critical, especially during surgical procedures and patient preparation. They may encounter challenges such as managing multiple patients' needs simultaneously, maintaining strict sterilization protocols, and adapting quickly to changes in surgical schedules. Effective communication and teamwork with surgeons, nurses, and administrative staff are also essential to ensure smooth workflow and optimal patient care. Embracing continuous learning and staying updated on new techniques can help assistants overcome these challenges and excel in their roles.

A Surgical Technician prepares operating rooms, manages instruments, and supports various surgical specialties. The roles overlap in certifications and work environments, but their specific duties and focus areas differ.

How do you become a plastic surgery assistant?

To become a plastic surgery assistant, individuals typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, and some roles require post-secondary education or certification in medical assisting or related fields. Relevant skills include knowledge of medical terminology, patient care, and familiarity with surgical procedures, often gained through on-the-job training or certification programs. Certification as a medical assistant or surgical technologist can enhance job prospects.

What degree do you need to be a plastic surgery assistant?

A plastic surgery assistant typically needs a high school diploma or equivalent; some positions may require post-secondary education such as a certificate or associate degree in healthcare or a related field. Relevant skills include knowledge of medical procedures and patient care, and certification in CPR or first aid can be beneficial. Requirements vary by employer and state regulations.

Job description

Join Our Dream Team in the Heights!

We’re a boutique plastic and aesthetic surgery practice in the heart of Houston Heights, and we’re looking for a talented Certified Surgical First Assist who’s just as comfortable stepping in as a scrub tech as well.

If you love precision, artistry, and working in a positive, patient-focused environment where every detail matters, this is your place.

We’re not a rushed hospital OR. We’re a tight-knit surgical team that values skill, teamwork, and personality just as much as experience.

What You’ll Do

  • Be the surgeon’s right hand during beautiful, transformative procedures from meticulous suturing to assisting with simple smaller less invasive procedures.

  • Take the lead as a scrub tech, setting up, maintaining, and turning over the OR with confidence and finesse.

  • Anticipate needs, think two steps ahead, and help keep our surgical days smooth, safe, and efficient.

  • Work alongside a supportive team that genuinely enjoys what we do (and each other!).

Who You Are

  • A Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA, CSA, or equivalent) — with hands-on OR experience.

  • Confident jumping between First Assist and Scrub Tech roles.

  • BLS certified (ACLS a plus).

  • Experienced in plastic, cosmetic, or reconstructive surgery  or eager to grow in the field.

  • Detail-oriented, dependable, and upbeat  the kind of teammate everyone wants by their side.

Schedule & Perks

  • Part-Time: 1–2 surgery days per week (flexible based on case schedule).

  • Competitive hourly pay, based on your experience and credentials.

  • A beautiful Houston Heights location, easy parking, and a great work environment.

  • A fun, professional team where your contribution is valued, no corporate OR stress here!
