What is plastic injection molding?

Plastic injection molding is a manufacturing process used to produce parts by injecting molten plastic material into a mold. The process involves melting plastic pellets, injecting the liquid into a custom-designed mold cavity, and then cooling the material until it solidifies into the final shape. This method is widely used due to its ability to produce high volumes of identical parts with complex shapes and fine details. It's commonly used in industries such as automotive, consumer goods, electronics, and medical devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a plastic injection molding technician?

To thrive as a Plastic Injection Molding Technician, you need a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, mechanical aptitude, and familiarity with material properties, usually supported by a high school diploma or technical certification. Proficiency in using injection molding machines, process control software, and quality inspection tools is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you stand out in this role. These skills ensure the efficient production of high-quality parts, minimize downtime, and maintain safety and productivity on the manufacturing floor.

What are some common challenges faced by plastic injection molding technicians, and how can they be addressed?

Plastic Injection Molding Technicians often encounter challenges such as machine downtime, material inconsistencies, and maintaining product quality. Addressing these requires strong troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and good communication with maintenance and quality control teams. Proactively inspecting equipment, adhering to preventive maintenance schedules, and collaborating closely with engineers help minimize defects and ensure efficient production. Continuous learning and staying updated with new molding technologies also support long-term success in this role.

What is the difference between Plastic Injection Molding vs Plastic Mold Designer?

Job description

Lead Injection Molding Process Technician

Location: Twinsburg, Ohio
Pay: $75,000 to $110,000 annually
Job Type: Full-time, direct hire
Shift: Day shift, generally 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Schedule: Three weeks working Monday through Friday and one week working Tuesday through Saturday each month. Occasional schedule flexibility will be required to cover other Lead Process Technicians during absences or vacations.

Position Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Lead Injection Molding Process Technician to serve as the senior hands-on processing resource on the production floor.

The Lead Injection Molding Process Technician will lead complex machine start-ups, restarts, process troubleshooting, robot programming, and process optimization while training and developing approximately nine Process Technicians.

This is not a desk-based Process Engineer position. Approximately 90% of the job is spent on the production floor working directly with injection molding machines, molds, robots, materials, technicians, and production employees.

The right Lead Injection Molding Process Technician candidate enjoys solving difficult molding problems at the press and can teach other technicians how to do the same.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead injection molding machine start-ups, restarts, and process recoveries.
  • Establish, troubleshoot, optimize, and document molding processes.
  • Diagnose and correct visual, dimensional, and functional part defects.
  • Program, adjust, and troubleshoot robots and molding-cell automation.
  • Improve cycle time, scrap, quality, uptime, and overall process stability.
  • Train, coach, and provide technical direction to Process Technicians.
  • Standardize processing methods and reinforce scientific molding practices.
  • Support mold trials, process development, validation, and new-product launches.
  • Work with Production, Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, and Tooling to resolve manufacturing problems.
  • Provide occasional coverage when another Lead Process Technician is unavailable.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong hands-on plastic injection molding processing experience.
  • Ability to independently start, troubleshoot, and optimize molding processes.
  • RJG Master Molder I certification or equivalent advanced scientific molding training and expertise.
  • Strong knowledge of scientific molding principles.
  • Experience resolving visual and dimensional molding defects.
  • Experience programming or troubleshooting molding robots and automation.
  • Ability to train and develop other Process Technicians.
  • Willingness to spend approximately 90% of the workday on the production floor.
  • Ability to work the required schedule and provide occasional coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience serving as the senior technical resource in an injection molding operation.
  • Experience with two-shot molding, overmolding, vertical molding, engineered resins, or high-heat materials.
  • Previous lead or supervisory experience.
  • Process Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related technical education.

Compensation and Advancement

Compensation ranges from $75,000 to $110,000, based on injection molding expertise, RJG training, robotics experience, leadership ability, and technical depth.

The upper end of the range is reserved for someone who can immediately function as the facility’s highest-level hands-on processing resource.

This newly created position offers potential advancement into either a Technical Director or Production Manager role, depending on the individual’s strengths and career interests.
