As of Jun 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for plaster painter in the United States is $21.18, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.55 and $23.80 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Do plasterers make good money?

Plasterers typically earn a median annual wage that is above the national average for construction trades, with experienced workers and those in high-demand areas earning higher salaries. Their income can increase with specialization, certifications, and years of experience, and they often work in environments requiring physical skill and knowledge of tools and materials.

What are some common challenges faced by plaster painters on job sites, and how can they be managed?

Plaster painters often encounter challenges such as working on uneven surfaces, dealing with varying drying times, and ensuring a smooth, consistent finish. Managing these challenges requires a strong understanding of surface preparation, attention to detail, and adaptability to different environmental conditions. Effective communication with other construction professionals, such as plasterers and site supervisors, is also crucial to coordinate schedules and maintain high-quality results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Plaster Painter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Plaster Painter, you need expertise in surface preparation, plastering techniques, and painting, often backed by vocational training or an apprenticeship. Familiarity with tools such as trowels, plaster mixers, sanders, and a variety of paints and finishes is typically required. Attention to detail, steady hand-eye coordination, and good communication skills help ensure high-quality finishes and effective teamwork. These skills are crucial for delivering durable, visually appealing results and maintaining safety and productivity on job sites.

What is the difference between Plaster Painter vs Drywall Finisher?

AspectPlaster PainterDrywall Finisher

Work EnvironmentWorks on plastered surfaces, often outdoors or in older buildingsWorks on drywall joints and surfaces, mainly indoors
Industry UsageCommon in renovation, restoration, and new construction involving plasterPrimarily in new construction and drywall installation projects

While both roles involve finishing surfaces, a Plaster Painter specializes in applying paint over plastered surfaces, often requiring plastering skills. A Drywall Finisher focuses on smoothing drywall joints and surfaces, typically working with drywall materials. Understanding these differences helps clients choose the right professional for their project needs.

What are plaster painters?

Plaster painters are skilled tradespeople who apply paint, coatings, and sometimes decorative finishes to plastered surfaces on walls and ceilings. They often work on newly plastered areas to protect and enhance their appearance or restore older surfaces. Their work may involve surface preparation, priming, and using specialized paints or techniques to achieve a smooth, durable finish.

What jobs will no longer exist in 2030?

The plaster painter profession is unlikely to disappear entirely by 2030, but automation and new building technologies may reduce demand for manual wall finishing jobs. Skills in digital design, sustainable materials, and advanced tools could become more important for future construction and renovation roles. Some traditional trades may evolve or decline as technology advances, but complete obsolescence is uncertain.

How much do plastering workers make?

Plaster painters typically earn between $30,000 and $60,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and whether they work as contractors or employees. Skilled workers with certifications and experience in specialized finishes can earn higher wages, especially in commercial or high-end residential projects.

What kind of painters make the most money?

Among painters, specialized roles such as industrial or commercial painters tend to earn higher wages than residential painters due to the complexity and scale of projects. Skilled painters with certifications, experience, and proficiency in advanced techniques or equipment often command higher salaries. In the context of plaster painters, those with expertise in decorative finishes or working on large commercial projects typically earn more.
