As of Jun 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for plant genomics in the United States is $18.24, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.35 and $18.27 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is plant genomics?

Plant genomics is the study of the structure, function, evolution, and mapping of the complete set of DNA (the genome) in plants. It involves sequencing and analyzing plant genomes to understand genes and their roles in growth, development, and adaptation. This field helps improve crop yields, disease resistance, and stress tolerance by identifying useful genetic traits. Researchers use genomics to accelerate plant breeding and develop better varieties for agriculture and environmental sustainability.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in plant genomics research teams?

Professionals in plant genomics often encounter challenges such as managing large-scale genomic data, staying current with rapidly evolving sequencing technologies, and integrating interdisciplinary knowledge from bioinformatics, genetics, and plant biology. Collaboration with other scientists, such as agronomists and molecular biologists, is common and essential for successful projects. Additionally, balancing laboratory experiments with computational analysis and adapting to shifting research priorities can require strong organizational and communication skills.

What is the difference between Plant Genomics vs Plant Molecular Biologist?

AspectPlant GenomicsPlant Molecular Biologist
Required CredentialsDegree in Plant Biology, Genetics, or related field; often requires bioinformatics skillsDegree in Plant Biology, Molecular Biology, or related field; laboratory experience essential
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, universities, biotech companies focusing on genome analysisLaboratories, research institutions, academia working on gene function and expression
Industry UsageGenomics research, crop improvement, bioinformaticsGene expression studies, functional analysis, plant breeding

Plant Genomics focuses on analyzing plant genomes and bioinformatics, while Plant Molecular Biologists study gene functions and expression. Both roles often collaborate but differ in their primary focus and skill sets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Plant Genomics Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Plant Genomics Scientist, you need a strong background in genetics, molecular biology, and bioinformatics, usually supported by an advanced degree in plant sciences or a related field. Familiarity with genomic sequencing technologies, PCR, CRISPR gene editing, and software for analyzing large biological datasets is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective collaboration and communication skills help scientists excel in research teams. These competencies are crucial for advancing crop improvement, driving innovative research, and translating discoveries into real-world agricultural solutions.

Overview:

Career paths into the conservation field are not straightforward or obvious for many. The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s Conservation Internship Program is designed to give career-building, hands-on conservation experience to individuals who are interested in a career in the conservation and research space but have not yet had the opportunity or guidance into this rewarding field. Through this internship, we aim to bring in people curious and passionate about the environment who will bring in fresh ideas and new energy strengthening this field and facilitating shared leadership.

The Plant Conservation Genomics Assistant will work with the Biodiversity Team to use molecular genomics techniques to understand and conserve the California flora. In addition to providing training and experience relevant to this internship, the Garden is committed to supporting the intern through:

  • Professional development opportunities including workshops and graduate school panels
  • Participation in a research project
  • Presenting a poster of your research project at a local botanical symposium in the fall
  • Becoming part of a network of scientists at various career stages as you take your first steps into plant conservation

This temporary position is being offered at 40 hours per week, for 8-10 weeks, between June and September 2026, and reports to the Plant Genomics Lab Manager.

What You’ll Do:

  • Work in the SBBG Plant Genomics Lab, assisting with data collection on a focused research question
  • Learn laboratory techniques including genomic DNA isolation and gel electrophoresis
  • May assist with sequence analysis
  • Help the Garden with outreach by presenting results as a poster

While botany or lab experience is not necessary, however ...

You Will Definitely Need:

  • A keen interest in botanical conservation topics and attention to detail are essential.
  • To be a college-level student (you need not be currently enrolled) OR have relevant experience or education
  • A strong interest in botany, rare plant conservation, ecology, or related fields with career goals in this direction
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to make careful plant dissections, handle priceless museum specimens, or precisely sample and transfer small volumes of fluid using micropipettes.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Support for the Garden’s mission and goals
  • A reliable means of transportation to and from the Garden

You Must Be Able To:

  • Sit for up to 2 hours at a time and use a computer for lengthy periods
