Planning Internships information

What is a planning internship?

Planning internships are temporary positions that provide students or recent graduates with practical experience in the field of urban, regional, or city planning. These internships allow individuals to work alongside professional planners on projects related to community development, land use, transportation, environmental planning, and policy analysis. Interns gain valuable hands-on skills, insights into planning processes, and exposure to real-world challenges and solutions in the public or private sector. Planning internships are an essential step for those considering a career in planning and are often required or highly recommended for planning degree programs.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a planning internship?

As a planning intern, you'll typically assist with a variety of tasks such as conducting site analyses, preparing maps and reports, assisting with community outreach, and supporting senior planners in meetings and presentations. You'll often work on real projects that may involve urban development, transportation planning, or environmental assessment, depending on the organization's focus. Collaboration is common, as you'll likely interact with other interns, planners, engineers, and sometimes local government representatives. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to the planning process and helps build your professional portfolio.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a planning intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Planning Intern, you typically need coursework in urban planning, geography, or a related field, along with strong research and analytical skills. Familiarity with GIS software, Microsoft Office Suite, and data visualization tools is often expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational abilities set outstanding interns apart in collaborative environments. These skills ensure effective project support, clear communication of ideas, and successful contributions to planning initiatives.
