What is a planner intern?

Planner Interns are students or recent graduates who assist professional planners in fields such as urban planning, transportation, or event planning. They typically work under the supervision of experienced staff, helping with research, data analysis, report preparation, and community engagement activities. The internship provides hands-on experience and exposure to real-world planning projects, which helps interns build relevant skills and professional networks. These positions are often stepping stones to full-time planning roles after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a planner intern?

To thrive as a Planner Intern, you need foundational knowledge in urban planning or a related field, often supported by ongoing coursework or a degree in planning, geography, or environmental studies. Familiarity with GIS software, data analysis tools, and Microsoft Office Suite is typically required. Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills help you effectively collaborate with stakeholders and present planning concepts. These abilities are essential for supporting planning projects, conducting research, and contributing to successful community development initiatives.

What types of projects and tasks can a planner intern expect to work on during their internship?

You may work closely with senior planners, attend public meetings, and help draft recommendations or presentations. The role often involves collaboration with other departments and stakeholders, providing valuable exposure to the planning process and teamwork within a professional environment.
