Job description

Position Objective:

Ponderosa Lodge (“PL”) Counselors are responsible to model a genuine lifestyle of Christian discipleship, providing for campers safety and well-being while mentoring and nurturing spiritual growth through program activities and curriculum in a manner consistent with MHA’s mission, vision and values.

General Qualifications:

The Ponderosa Lodge (“PL”) Counselor is a Ministerial position. Ministerial staff render their work, stewardship, relationships and behavior as evidence of being followers of Jesus Christ while embracing and affirming Mount Hermon Association, Inc.’s (“MHA”) mission, vision and beliefs.


Key Job Accountabilities:           

  • Live with and lead approx. 7-8 campers each week. Lead small group Bible studies. Seek out and connect to campers leading them one step closer to Jesus through activities and curriculum.
  • Actively participate in all programs, serving in both counseling and program/activity positions with enthusiasm.
  • Oversee and implement a variety of activities as assigned.
  • Share in the responsibilities of keeping camp areas including cabins, living areas, workspaces and supplies clean and orderly.
  • Attend all staff meetings and events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the PL Counselor Coordinators.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None
Education/Certifications/Licenses:
  • High school graduate.
  • At least 2 years' college experience preferred.
  • Must be CPR/First Aid certified.
Work Experience:
  • Prior experience working with junior high and high school students.
  • Prior camp counseling experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to articulate the gospel of Jesus Christ as communicated in Scripture.
  • Ability to demonstrate a personal, committed and thought-through faith in Christ.
  • Positive role model, listener, enthusiastic leader, and friend.
  • Possess creativity, willingness to learn and ability to teach and lead Bible studies.
  • Ability to engage in a variety of outdoor activities.
Physical Demands:

The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Requires seeing, hearing, talking, sitting, standing, squatting, stooping, twisting, and hiking.

Additional Requirements/Skills:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age due to the requirement for onsite community living.
  • Adherence to the basic principles as expressed in MHA's Mission, Vision, Values and Commitment statements.
  • Adherence to company dress code and professional standards for personal grooming and appearance.
  • Commitment to spending time serving campers and helping to create a great experience for them.
  • Satisfactory completion of background investigation as well as ability to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
