What are piping jobs?

Piping jobs involve the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of piping systems that transport fluids and gases in various industries such as oil and gas, chemical, power plants, and manufacturing. Professionals in this field work with materials like steel, copper, and plastic to ensure safe and efficient movement of substances. Their responsibilities may include reading blueprints, welding or assembling pipes, inspecting systems for leaks or defects, and adhering to safety standards. Specialized roles within piping can include piping engineers, pipefitters, welders, and designers.

What are piping jobs?

Piping jobs are available in a variety of industries, such as the liquid natural gas and oil extraction fields, chemical processing, residential and commercial building construction, and other production sectors, such as brewing. A major component of plumbing involves piping work, which offers several career opportunities, such as pipefitting. Piping jobs require a combination of mechanical skills, dexterity, and physical strength. You may also need strong attention to detail and analytical problem-solving skills to examine issues in existing systems or plan a design for a new project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a piping engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Piping Engineer, you need strong knowledge of piping design, fluid mechanics, and industry codes, typically supported by a degree in mechanical or chemical engineering. Familiarity with technical tools like AutoCAD, PDMS, CAESAR II, and relevant safety certifications is essential. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help in coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and resolving on-site challenges. These abilities ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective piping systems that meet project and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges piping engineers face when working on large-scale industrial projects?

Piping engineers on large-scale industrial projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, managing tight project timelines, and ensuring compliance with stringent safety and quality standards. They must also address unexpected site conditions and resolve conflicts between design and existing infrastructure. Effective communication and adaptability are essential, as piping engineers regularly collaborate with civil, mechanical, and process teams to deliver integrated solutions.

What is the difference between Piping vs Pipefitter?

AspectPipingPipefitter
CertificationsOften requires certifications in welding, ASME standards, and pipe installationRequires similar certifications, focusing on pipe installation and welding
Work EnvironmentWorks in industrial plants, construction sites, and manufacturing facilitiesWorks primarily in construction, industrial, and maintenance settings
Industry UsageUsed across oil & gas, chemical, power plants, and manufacturingCommonly employed in construction, industrial plants, and maintenance

Both Piping and Pipefitter roles involve working with pipes, welding, and installation. While they share certifications and work environments, Piping often refers to the broader design and layout of piping systems, whereas Pipefitters focus on the installation and assembly of pipes on-site.

Job description

Job Title: Piping Designer

Job Description

This mid-level CAD Designer role focuses on piping and industrial projects within the oil and gas and related industries. You will produce high-quality 3D models and comprehensive design packages, including P&IDs, isometrics, and piping layouts, while collaborating closely with engineering and project teams. The position supports multiple small-to-mid size projects and plays a key role in maintaining efficient workflow as project volume increases.

Responsibilities

  • Create detailed 3D piping models using CADWorx, ensuring accuracy and alignment with project specifications and industry standards.
  • Develop and maintain complete design deliverables, including isometrics, P&IDs, civil and structural drawings, and detailed plans to support engineers and project managers.
  • Produce piping layouts and associated documentation for oil and gas or similar industrial facilities, adhering to established standards and workflows.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers and project managers to understand project requirements, resolve design issues, and incorporate feedback into design packages.
  • Manage multiple small-to-mid size projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Apply knowledge of industry terminology, standards, and midstream or related workflows to ensure designs are practical, safe, and constructible.
  • Support project teams by updating models and drawings as projects progress, maintaining consistency and accuracy across all design documents.
  • Communicate clearly with team members, providing regular updates on design status and proactively addressing potential design or coordination challenges.
  • Contribute to a tight-knit team culture by sharing expertise, supporting colleagues, and participating in team events and collaborative initiatives.
  • Demonstrate a progression mindset by seeking opportunities to grow into senior designer, subject matter expert, or leadership roles over time.

Essential Skills

  • 6–10 years of drafting and design experience in oil and gas or similar industrial environments, with flexibility for approximately 5–12 years for technically strong candidates.
  • Hands-on experience with CADWorx 3D modeling, including creating complete 3D piping models rather than solely performing 2D drafting.
  • Proficiency in producing piping design deliverables such as isometrics, P&IDs, civil drawings, structural drawings, and detailed plans.
  • Industrial experience in oil and gas or similar sectors, with an understanding of industry standards, terminology, and workflows (midstream preferred, but mining or water/wastewater experience considered transferable).
  • Strong CAD skills, including experience with 3D modeling tools and related civil and structural design software.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and other team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, contributing to a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  • Comfort working in a contract or project-based environment, with flexibility to adapt to changing project demands.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Civil 3D or similar civil design software is beneficial for supporting civil and structural drawing production.
  • Background in structural or civil design within industrial facilities is a plus.
  • Exposure to midstream oil and gas projects or comparable industrial sectors such as mining or water/wastewater is advantageous.
  • Interest in professional growth into senior designer, subject matter expert, or leadership positions.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships within a tight-knit team and contribute positively to team culture.
  • Openness to transitioning from contract roles into a more stable, long-term opportunity.

Work Environment

This role is based onsite in Colorado Springs, with in-office presence required. The position starts as 100% in-office, with flexibility available after several months based on performance and team needs. You can expect approximately 10–20% travel to project sites or client locations. The team operates in a tight-knit, collaborative environment that offers autonomy and visibility, clear growth paths into senior, subject matter expert, or leadership roles, and a stable pipeline of projects.
