How much do piping technology jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for piping technology in the United States is $51.62, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $42.31 and $61.30 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in piping technology, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in piping technology often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple engineering disciplines, ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards, and managing complex project timelines. Effective communication and collaboration with structural, mechanical, and civil teams are essential for avoiding design conflicts and delays. Staying current with evolving codes and utilizing advanced design software can also help streamline workflows and ensure project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Piping Technology, and why are they important?

To thrive in Piping Technology, you need a solid understanding of fluid mechanics, materials science, and engineering principles, usually backed by a degree in mechanical or civil engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, piping design codes (like ASME), and relevant certifications such as Certified Pipe Welding Inspector are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective design and installation of piping systems in industrial settings.

What is piping technology?

Piping technology refers to the engineering discipline focused on the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of piping systems used to transport fluids such as water, oil, gas, and chemicals. These systems are critical in industries like oil and gas, power generation, chemical manufacturing, and water treatment. Piping technologists ensure that pipes, valves, fittings, and related equipment are designed and installed according to industry standards and safety regulations. The field also involves considerations for materials selection, pressure containment, thermal expansion, and corrosion control.

What is the difference between Piping Technology vs Pipefitting?

AspectPiping TechnologyPipefitting
CertificationsOften requires technical training, certifications in piping design or CADTypically requires apprenticeship, journeyman or union certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign, engineering, and installation planning in industrial or construction settingsOn-site assembly, fitting, and installation of pipes in various facilities
Industry UsageUsed in engineering, design, and project management within industrial sectorsHands-on installation and maintenance in construction and manufacturing

While Piping Technology focuses on design, analysis, and planning of piping systems, Pipefitting involves the physical installation and assembly of pipes. Both roles are essential in the piping industry but differ in their focus and skill sets.

    • Develop detailed 2D and 3D piping designs and layouts for industrial facilities such as oil and gas plants, refineries, power stations, and manufacturing facilities.
    • Interpret project requirements, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), and client specifications to create efficient piping system designs.
    • Prepare piping general arrangement drawings, isometric drawings, and fabrication drawings.
    • Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and best practices, including ASME, ANSI, API, and ISO.
    • Optimize piping layouts for operational accessibility, safety, and constructability.
  • Checking and Quality Assurance
    • Perform thorough checks and reviews of piping drawings, isometrics, and material take-offs for technical accuracy, consistency, and compliance.
    • Validate the correctness of dimensions, material specifications, and system configurations.
    • Identify design discrepancies, clashes, or potential issues, and recommend corrective actions.
    • Ensure all piping deliverables align with client requirements and project scopes.
  • Collaboration and Coordination
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, process, civil, and electrical engineers, to ensure cohesive designs.
    • Coordinate with other designers and external stakeholders to resolve interface and spatial challenges.
    • Participate in design reviews and provide input to improve system functionality and design efficiency.
    • Support the construction team by addressing design-related queries and providing field modifications if necessary.
  • Leadership and Mentorship
    • Lead and mentor junior piping designers and drafters, ensuring adherence to project schedules and quality standards.
    • Promote the use of standard templates, procedures, and tools to enhance team productivity.
    • Share technical expertise and provide guidance on complex design challenges.
  • Technical Expertise and Documentation
    • Ensure compliance with local and international piping codes and standards (e.g., ASME B31.3, B31.4, API 570).
    • Prepare detailed technical documentation, including reports, design philosophies, and construction support packages.
    • Stay updated on new industry trends, technologies, and software tools.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or related degree preferred.
