Pipeline Controller Operator information

What is a pipeline controller operator?

Pipeline Controller Operators are professionals responsible for monitoring and managing the flow of oil, gas, or other materials through pipelines. They use advanced control systems and technology to ensure safe, efficient, and continuous pipeline operations. Their duties include detecting leaks, responding to emergencies, maintaining regulatory compliance, and coordinating with field personnel to address any issues. This role is critical for preventing environmental hazards and ensuring the reliable delivery of resources.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a pipeline controller operator?

To thrive as a Pipeline Controller Operator, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and typically a background in engineering, operations, or a related technical field. Familiarity with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, pipeline monitoring software, and relevant safety certifications such as API or DOT compliance is essential. Outstanding situational awareness, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial to ensure the safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of pipeline systems, preventing environmental hazards and maintaining regulatory compliance.

What is the difference between Pipeline Controller Operator vs Pipeline Technician?

AspectPipeline Controller OperatorPipeline Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a high school diploma, technical certifications, and safety trainingRequires similar certifications, often with additional technical or mechanical training
Work EnvironmentControl rooms, monitoring stations, and field sitesFieldwork, maintenance sites, and equipment inspection areas
Industry UsageUsed in oil, gas, and pipeline industries for monitoring and controlInvolved in installation, maintenance, and repair of pipelines

The Pipeline Controller Operator primarily monitors and controls pipeline operations from control centers, ensuring safety and efficiency. In contrast, the Pipeline Technician focuses on maintaining and repairing pipeline infrastructure in the field. Both roles require technical certifications and safety training, but their daily tasks and work environments differ significantly.

What are common challenges faced by pipeline controller operators and how can they be addressed?

Pipeline Controller Operators often face challenges such as monitoring large volumes of data simultaneously, responding quickly to abnormal operating conditions, and effectively communicating with field personnel during emergencies. Staying vigilant and maintaining strong attention to detail are crucial, as a small oversight can lead to significant safety or environmental incidents. Continuous training on updated control systems and emergency protocols, as well as fostering strong teamwork and communication skills, can help operators successfully manage these challenges.

Job description

Xometry is looking for a Sales Manager, US Defense Sales responsible for building and leading a high-performing sales team focused on direct U.S. Government demand across the Department of War (Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Special Operations). This role is centered on capturing sustainment, readiness, and research-driven manufacturing demand, with a strong focus on environments where the government owns or authors technical data such as research labs, depots, and program offices. The Sales Manager will lead a team that converts fragmented, technically complex demand such as legacy parts, NIIN and NSN-driven procurement, and engineer-to-order requirements into scalable, repeatable revenue streams.

The role will also support engagement with Xometry's network of defense advisors and consultants to help unlock access, shape opportunities, and accelerate deal progression.

What Success Looks Like:

  • Builds a team that consistently wins direct government opportunities
  • Establishes repeatable plays across labs, depots, and program offices
  • Effectively leverages advisors to create access, influence requirements, and accelerate deals
  • Converts early-stage engagements into programmatic, recurring revenue streams
  • Positions Xometry as a trusted execution partner for readiness and sustainment

How You'll Contribute:

  • Build and Lead a High-Performance Government-Focused Team
    • Recruit, develop, and manage Account Executives focused on direct DoW accounts
    • Segment and assign coverage across research labs, depots and sustainment commands, and program offices
    • Drive accountability to quota, pipeline coverage, and conversion metrics
  • Drive Direct Government Growth Strategy
    • Develop and execute account strategies focused on sustainment and MRO demand, NIIN and NSN-driven procurement, and low-volume, high-mix manufacturing requirements
    • Prioritize opportunities where the government owns technical data and procurement cycles are shorter and less OEM-constrained
    • Build targeted outbound motions into high-value DoW entities
  • Build Repeatable Government Sales Plays
    • Develop and scale playbooks for lab-driven demand, depot and sustainment sourcing, and legacy part reproduction and reverse engineering workflows
    • Standardize qualification and deal progression for technical data packages and incomplete drawings
    • Improve win rates on complex, manually quoted opportunities
  • Own Cross-Functional Execution
    • Partner with engineering, sourcing, and operations to ensure strong execution
    • Ensure high-confidence delivery on mission-critical orders
    • Lead structured deal reviews for large or strategic opportunities
  • Pipeline, Forecasting and Performance Management
    • Maintain pipeline discipline and forecasting accuracy in Salesforce
    • Use data to identify conversion gaps, cycle time inefficiencies, and expansion opportunities
    • Report key metrics, risks, and insights to leadership
  • Motions grounded building a #300 million run rate business by FY28

What You'll Bring to Xometry:

  • 6-10+ years of sales experience
  • Experience selling into U.S. Government environments, Department of War or DoD preferred
  • Proven ability to build pipeline in complex, non-transactional government environments
  • Ability to navigate multi-stakeholder sales cycles
  • Ability to close technically complex opportunities

Preferred Experience:

  • Familiarity with DoW research labs, depots, and acquisition organizations
  • Experience in sustainment and MRO environments
  • Experience in manufacturing or engineering-driven sales
  • Experience working with technical data packages, drawings, or engineering requirements
  • Experience in export-controlled environments such as ITAR or EAR
  • Experience leveraging consultants, advisors, or industry networks to drive sales outcomes

Leadership Traits We Value:

  • Operator and builder who creates structure and repeatability
  • Executive presence with senior government stakeholders
  • Ability to translate relationships into pipeline and revenue
  • Strong cross-functional leadership across sales, engineering, sourcing, and operations

The estimated base salary range for new hires into this role is $113,000-$130,000 annually + commission depending on factors such as job-related skills, relevant experience, and location. We also offer a competitive benefits package, including 401(k) match, medical, dental and vision insurance; life and disability insurance; generous paid time off including vacation, sick leave, floating and fixed holidays, maternity and bonding leave; EAP, other wellbeing resources; and much more.
