Job description

About Accel International

Accel International manufactures silver-, nickel- and tin-plated copper and copper-alloy conductors for the wire and cable market, serving aerospace, medical, telecommunications and industrial customers. Our Port St. Lucie facility is a purpose-built manufacturing complex and the newest plant in our network, which also includes operations in Connecticut and Indiana.

We are in the middle of a major capital investment program that will substantially expand what this plant can produce. This role exists to put that equipment on the floor and make it run.

The Opportunity

Accel is investing $200M in new production equipment across the organization — plating lines, stranding and wire drawing machines, and heat treatment equipment. This role puts that equipment on the floor at Port St. Lucie.

The CAPEX Technician is the person who receives this equipment, sets it, connects it, commissions it and hands it over to production ready to run. You will work alongside OEM field engineers, electrical and mechanical contractors, riggers and our own maintenance team — and you will be on the tools yourself, every day.

This is a permanent position, not a project contract. Once the current wave of machines is running, the role continues to own capital equipment installation, relocation and major upgrades as the plant grows.

What You Will Do

Mechanical Installation

■ Receive, unpack, inspect and inventory incoming equipment; document shipping damage and shortages against packing lists and purchase orders.

■ Rig, move and set machines using forklifts, cranes, gantries, skates and hydraulic jacks in coordination with contracted riggers.

■ Set machines to layout drawings, level and align to specification, and anchor to foundations and baseplates.

■ Assemble mechanical sub-systems: capstans, drive trains, gearboxes, take-up and pay-off units, guarding, guides and tooling.

■ Install and connect utilities to the machine — compressed air, cooling water, hydraulics, lubrication and exhaust — including pipe, tube and hose runs.

■ Perform precision alignment (dial indicator, laser alignment) on drives, couplings and rotating assemblies.

Electrical Installation & Controls

■ Install and terminate power feeds, disconnects, control panels, junction boxes, conduit and cable tray to NEC and plant standards.

■ Land motor, drive, sensor and instrumentation wiring; verify against electrical schematics and I/O lists.

■ Support VFD, servo and PLC/HMI setup, parameter loading and I/O checkout alongside OEM engineers and controls support.

■ Verify grounding, bonding, phase rotation and safety-circuit integrity before energization.

■ Function-test interlocks, E-stops, light curtains and guard switches, and verify the machine performs to its safety design.

Commissioning & Startup

■ Execute pre-power checks, first energization, dry runs and progressive load-up under the OEM commissioning plan.

■ Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) at OEM sites and run Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) on the plant floor.

■ Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic faults during startup and debug; drive punch-list items to closure.

■ Run production trials with operators and engineering to confirm the machine holds speed, tension, dimension and quality targets.

■ Train operators and maintenance technicians on the new equipment and hand over a machine that the plant can run and maintain without you.

Project Coordination

■ Own the install sequence and schedule for the machines assigned to you, and flag slippage before it becomes a problem.

■ Coordinate OEM field service engineers, electrical and mechanical contractors, riggers and internal trades so the site is ready when they arrive.

■ Track installation materials, spares and long-lead items; raise requisitions and follow up with purchasing and vendors.

■ Report status, risks and blockers to the VP of Operations in a form leadership can act on.

■ Support capital project scoping — site surveys, utility load assessments, layout input and installation cost estimates.

Safety, Compliance & Documentation

■ Work to lockout/tagout, arc flash, hot work, confined space, fall protection and crane/rigging procedures without exception, and hold contractors to the same standard.

■ Prepare and follow job hazard analyses for installation and commissioning tasks.

■ Maintain redline drawings, as-built documentation, wiring records, commissioning checklists and machine files.

■ Build initial preventive maintenance schedules and spare parts lists for new equipment and load them into the CMMS.

What You Need

Installation experience. 5+ years installing, commissioning or relocating industrial production machinery in a manufacturing plant, at an OEM, or with an industrial contractor.

Both trades. Genuine hands-on capability in mechanical assembly and alignment AND in industrial electrical work — conduit, terminations, motor and control wiring, reading schematics. Strength in one and working familiarity with the other is acceptable; strength in only one is not.

Drawings. Able to read and work from mechanical assembly drawings, P&IDs, electrical schematics, ladder logic printouts and plant layouts.

Diagnostics. Competent with multimeter, megger, clamp meter, dial indicators, precision levels and standard alignment tools.

Rigging. Experience moving and setting heavy machinery — slings, shackles, load ratings, lift planning, forklift and overhead crane operation.

Safety discipline. Demonstrated LOTO and electrical safety practice in a live production environment.

Self-direction. Able to take a machine from crate to production with limited supervision, and to keep contractors and OEM engineers moving.

Availability. Willing to work off-shift, weekends and extended hours during installation and startup windows, and to travel up to 15%.

Education. High school diploma or GED required. Technical school, apprenticeship, military technical training or an associate degree in industrial maintenance, electrical technology, mechatronics or similar is strongly preferred.

What Would Set You Apart

Project management. Experience running a multi-machine or multi-contractor installation — schedule ownership, sequencing, vendor coordination, budget tracking. Formal PM training or CAPM/PMP is a plus but the track record matters more than the certificate.

Wire and cable industry background. Direct experience with wire drawing, stranding, bunching, annealing, extrusion or plating equipment.

Plating and chemical process equipment. Installation of electroplating lines, rectifiers, tanks, filtration, ventilation or wastewater treatment systems.

Controls depth. Allen-Bradley or Siemens PLC and HMI experience; VFD and servo drive commissioning; network setup (Ethernet/IP, Profinet).

Greenfield or expansion experience. Having stood up new production lines or a new plant, rather than only replacing single machines.

Certifications. Journeyman electrician license, OSHA 30, certified rigger/signalperson, forklift and aerial lift certification, NFPA 70E training.

CMMS and documentation. Experience building PM programs and equipment records in a CMMS.

Languages. Bilingual English/Spanish.

What Success Looks Like

First 30 days

You know the plant layout, utilities, safety procedures and the equipment already on the floor. You have reviewed the incoming machine list, drawings and delivery schedule, and you have met the OEM and contractor contacts.

First 90 days

You have independently installed and commissioned your first machines. Documentation, as-builts and PM records for those machines are complete. Your install sequence for the next wave is planned and resourced.

First 12 months

The machines in your scope are running in production, installed on schedule, with no lost-time incidents. Operators and maintenance have been trained. You are trusted to own installs end to end and to be consulted on capital scoping.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment
