Job Definition:
Pipe Layers are responsible for installing pipe in storm sewers, gas utilities, and water mains. Laborers must have physical strength, endurance and must also be able to concentrate on their tasks. Assist Foreman and skilled craft workers in performing their assigned duties under close supervision
Typical Duties:
  • Digging, spreading and leveling dirt, sand and gravel using a pick shovel or rake
  • Installs, removes, and maintains a variety of erosion control products and liner. Clearing seditment
  • Lift, carry and hold construction materials, tools and supplies
  • Clean tools, equipment, material in work area
  • Mix, pour and spread concrete, asphalt, gravel and other materials using hand tools
  • Positioning, cutting and fusing pipe
  • Connecting various pipe pieces by glue, heat, or slip jointing
  • Maintaining depth by checking the laser beam or grade stakes and communicating with the operator
  • Cementing around pipes and inlets
  • Communicating with the operator about the alignment of the pipe by using hand signals to ensure the proper depth
  • Inspecting the pipe fittings to ensure it is defect free and clean
  • Perform a variety of machine tasks such as tapping soil, jackhammering and assisting in the fusing of pipe.
  • Work harmoniously, co-operatively and courteously with others at all times
  • Perform miscellaneous other duties and responsibilities as required
  • Loads, transports and unloads tools, equipment and supplies.
  • Operates manual material handling equipment such as hand jacks and wheeled carts
  • Assists in lifting, positioning and securing of materials and work pieces.
  • Perform minor maintenance and cleaning activities with tools and equipment.

Job Requirements
  • At least 3 years of sitework experience laying pipe on in a construction setting
  • Follow specific directions
  • Ability to work outside in the elements
  • Perform a variety of duties which may change often
  • Work within standards of accuracy
  • Repeat tasks of short duration according to set procedures and evaluate information using measurable standards
  • Stand or walk for long periods
  • Use arms and hands to reach for, handle and manipulate objects
  • Carry tools and equipment, stoop, kneel and crouch
  • See and hear well (either naturally or with correction)
  • Follow set procedures and standards.
