Position Summary:

This propane service technician role involves safely delivering propane to residential and commercial customers while maintaining high standards of professionalism. The technician conducts daily vehicle inspections, loads, and transfers propane in compliance with company policies, DOT, Hazmat, and safety regulations, ensuring accurate delivery documentation. They support customer satisfaction by communicating clearly, identifying safety concerns, and maintaining equipment and vehicles in excellent condition. The technician embodies Pinnacle Propane’s commitment to safety, compliance, and reliable service. They must ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations governing the storage, installation, delivery, and use of propane products. Following company policies and procedures outlined in employee and operation manuals is essential. The position reports directly to the Operations Manager.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Install, set, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and remove propane tanks, cylinders, regulators, piping, and related propane equipment.
  • Install underground and above-ground propane service lines to residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial customers in accordance with NFPA 54, NFPA 58, DOT, state, and local regulations.
  • Perform gas leak tests, pressure tests, gas system checks, and safety inspections before placing propane systems into service.
  • Diagnose and repair propane appliances and equipment, including water heaters, furnaces, fireplaces, cooktops, dryers, generators, pool heaters, and other propane-fueled equipment.
  • Install, replace, adjust, and convert propane appliances and regulators as required.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled inspections on customer propane systems.
  • Ensure all installations and repairs meet company quality standards and applicable federal, state, and local codes.
  • Respond to emergency service calls involving gas leaks, no-gas conditions, equipment failures, and other customer emergencies while following established safety procedures.
  • Safely operate vehicles, cranes, compressors, trenching equipment, power tools, and other equipment required to perform service work.
  • Complete required vehicle inspections, including daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and report mechanical issues promptly.
  • Maintain company vehicles, tools, testing equipment, and inventory in a clean, organized, and serviceable condition.
  • Accurately complete electronic work orders, installation records, leak check documentation, compliance forms, and customer service reports using company technology.
  • Educate customers on safe propane usage, appliance operation, emergency procedures, and system maintenance.
  • Maintain professional and courteous communication while delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, DOT regulations, and applicable industry standards.
  • Participate in after-hours emergency response and rotating on-call schedules as required.
  • Communicate safety concerns, customer issues, equipment deficiencies, and operational concerns promptly to management.
  • Safely lift, carry, push, pull, and maneuver propane equipment, cylinders, tools, and materials weighing up to 75 pounds, with occasional team lifting for heavier items.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support business operations.

Basic Qualifications Required:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum one (1) year of propane service, HVAC, plumbing, mechanical, utility, or related field experience preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement or the ability to obtain within company-established timeframes.
  • Hazmat Endorsement or ability to obtain within company-established timeframes.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate.
  • Ability to pass all DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform job duties safely.
  • Ability to read and interpret installation manuals, piping diagrams, technical specifications, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Working knowledge of propane equipment, regulators, piping systems, appliances, combustion systems, and pressure testing procedures preferred.
  • Ability to safely work independently with minimal supervision while exercising sound judgment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and mechanical aptitude.
  • Basic computer and mobile device skills for electronic documentation and work order completion.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds.
  • Frequently bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to dig trenches, install underground service lines, and perform physically demanding outdoor work.
  • Ability to work at varying heights using ladders and elevated work platforms.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work around propane, flammable gases, heavy equipment, and moving vehicles while maintaining constant awareness of safety hazards.
  • Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including flame-resistant clothing, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, hearing protection, and respiratory protection when required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 54 and NFPA 58 standards is preferred.
  • Knowledge of DOT and OSHA regulations applicable to propane operations.
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple service calls efficiently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, coworkers, dispatchers, and supervisors.
