What is a pianist?

Pianists are musicians who play the piano, either professionally or as a hobby. They may perform solo, accompany other musicians, or play as part of an ensemble or orchestra. Pianists often read sheet music, practice regularly to improve their technical skills, and may perform in a variety of settings, including concerts, recordings, or teaching environments. The role of a pianist can range from classical performance to jazz, pop, and other musical genres.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a piano teacher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Piano Teacher, you need strong proficiency in piano performance, music theory knowledge, and typically a degree in music or equivalent experience. Familiarity with digital music tools, notation software, and online teaching platforms is often beneficial. Patience, effective communication, and motivational skills help students progress and enjoy learning. These competencies ensure high-quality instruction, student engagement, and successful musical development.

What are some common challenges piano teachers face when working with students of varying skill levels?

Piano teachers often work with students who have a wide range of abilities, from complete beginners to advanced players. One challenge is adapting lesson plans and teaching styles to suit each individual's learning pace and musical goals. Additionally, maintaining student motivation and engagement can require creative approaches, especially when students encounter difficult pieces or technique hurdles. It's also important for teachers to balance technical instruction with fostering a love for music, all while managing scheduling and communication with parents or adult learners.

Job description

Help Kids Fall in Love With Piano Through Connection, Structure, and Support

Bloom Music Studio is a growing, group-focused piano studio with locations in Clive and Ankeny. Weโ€™re vibrant, playful, and always refining. Our students arenโ€™t just learning piano, theyโ€™re building confidence, resilience, and independence in a space where they feel safe and supported.

Weโ€™re looking for a teacher who loves kids, thrives in a structured environment, and knows how to bring calm and clarity to a busy classroom. This isnโ€™t just a teaching job, itโ€™s a chance to grow with us as we keep shaping a studio that helps kids truly bloom.

The Role: What Youโ€™ll Do

At Bloom, youโ€™ll teach across our three main class types: Piano Prep (ages 3โ€“5), Foundations (Kโ€“1), and Lab (2nd grade and up).

  • In Piano Prep and Foundations, youโ€™ll lead students together in a classroom-style setting, guiding them step by step through songs, games, and activities that build early music skills.
  • In Lab, each student has their own keyboard, headphones, and lesson path that matches their level. Your role is to keep the room focused and encouraging, while checking in individually with each student throughout the lesson to provide coaching, feedback, and support.

During lessons, youโ€™ll:

  • Welcome students warmly and set a calm, encouraging tone
  • Lead songs, games, and group activities in Piano Prep and Foundations
  • Guide Lab students along their independent paths, checking in individually several times per class
  • Watch for posture, focus, and effort, giving feedback that helps students improve right away
  • Support students as they record weekly lesson notes to share with families
  • Post clear, simple weekly goals so parents know how to support at home

In every class type, your presence helps students feel safe, confident, and capable as they grow their skills.

What Success Looks Like After 90 Days

  • Youโ€™re confidently leading groups of 3โ€“6 students, whether in a synchronous class or in Lab
  • You can walk into the studio and know exactly how to set up for the day, log into every app, navigate our systems and software, find what you need, and close up with confidence.
  • Youโ€™re spotting when systems could work better and bringing practical ideas to the team
  • Students trust you, parents value your updates, and you bring steady confidence even on busy days

What Itโ€™s Like to Work at Bloom

Weโ€™re not cookie-cutter, and we donโ€™t want to be. We try things, improve them, and keep what works. Your ideas matter here.

At Bloom, we believe:

  • Structure creates freedom
  • Boundaries are a gift
  • Kids do better when they feel safe and supported

With this job, youโ€™ll:

  • Teach in person (no house calls)
  • Be paid as a W2 employee for all hours worked: teaching, prep, and communication
  • Use tools that actually support your teaching (checklists, apps, parent updates)
  • Have a steady weekly schedule
  • Be part of a thoughtful, hardworking team that values clarity and kindness

Schedule & Hours

  • Afternoons and evenings only (typically 3:30โ€“7:30 PM)
  • Start with 8โ€“16 hours per week, with the possibility of more

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • 2+ years experience working with kids (teaching, camps, classrooms, or group settings)
  • Strong sight-reading skills (especially duets)
  • Comfort using tech like iPads/Chromebooks/Laptops, and Google Drive
  • Steady presence and deep respect for children
  • Ability to hold boundaries with kindness (no bribing, shaming, or yelling)
  • Clear communication with kids and parents
  • Growth mindset and willingness to receive feedback

Bonus Points If You:

  • Are a classroom teacher, or trained in child development
  • Have hands-on experience leading kids in real-life settings
  • Stay steady when a child is having a hard moment
  • Love creating clarity and structure that helps everyone succeed
  • See feedback as support, not criticism
  • Bring solutions instead of complaints

Why This Role is Special

Bloom is growing quickly, and weโ€™re building with intention. You wonโ€™t be asked to follow outdated methods or keep quiet when something could be better. Weโ€™re small enough that your voice matters, and weโ€™re growing fast enough that your ideas can shape the systems we use every day.

Weโ€™re not looking for perfect. Weโ€™re looking for a steady, kind, committed person who wants to make a lasting impact and grow alongside us.
