Physics Simulation information
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Physics Simulation position, and why are they important?
To thrive in a Physics Simulation role, you need a solid background in physics, mathematics, and computer science, often supported by a relevant STEM degree. Proficiency in simulation software (such as MATLAB, ANSYS, or COMSOL), programming languages (like Python or C++), and familiarity with numerical modeling systems are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective collaboration and communication abilities are highly valued in this field. These competencies ensure accurate simulation results, efficient teamwork, and the ability to tackle complex real-world challenges in research or industry settings.
What are the typical daily tasks and responsibilities for someone working in Physics Simulation?
Professionals in Physics Simulation spend much of their day developing, testing, and refining computational models to represent physical phenomena, often collaborating with engineers and scientists to define simulation objectives. Responsibilities may include writing or optimizing code, analyzing simulation outputs, adjusting parameters to improve accuracy, and documenting methodologies and results. You might also participate in team meetings to review project milestones, discuss findings, and recommend design or process improvements based on your simulations. The role often involves both independent technical work and cross-disciplinary cooperation, making adaptability and clear communication important for success.
What is a Physics Simulation job?
A Physics Simulation job involves developing and implementing mathematical models to replicate real-world physical behaviors in software. Professionals in this field work with physics engines, numerical methods, and programming to simulate motion, collisions, fluid dynamics, or other physical phenomena. These simulations are used in industries such as gaming, film VFX, engineering, and scientific research to test and visualize complex systems. Strong skills in physics, programming (e.g., C++, Python), and computational techniques are essential for success in this role.

Details
The University of Utah's Department of Radiation Oncology seeks a dynamic individual to join a strong team of medical physics faculty. The successful applicant will join an existing team of 14 medical physicists, 14 radiation oncologists, 11 certified medical dosimetrists, 2 medical physics residents and 4 medical physics assistants.
Commensurate with experience and skill set, an appointment at the Assistant Professor rank on either a Clinical or Tenure Line Track in the School of Medicine is anticipated.
Employer Info:
Located in beautiful Salt Lake City and set against the backdrop of the snow-covered Wasatch mountains within minutes of 7 world class ski resorts, the department has a tradition of academic and clinical excellence. The Department of Radiation Oncology occupies a spacious 30,000 square feet on the ground floor of the beautiful Huntsman Cancer Hospital. The Huntsman Cancer Institute is an NCI Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a member of the prestigious NCCN network of cancer centers.
Duties:
The successful faculty candidate will possess strong clinical skills along with research and teaching interests. Clinical duties will entail customary support and QA responsibilities of a clinical medical physicist. These responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, multiple aspects of clinical support and QA related to linear accelerator calibration, stereotactic and image guidance process QA, brachytherapy (LDR, HDR and Eye) support and potential for proton support. Our expectation is that the candidate will be a valuable member of our research team and will begin to participate immediately in academic projects. It is also expected that the candidate will be a valuable member of our teaching team and will share responsibilities related to our physician residency program and our CAMPEP accredited medical physics residency program.

Qualified candidates will have a PhD degree in Medical Physics with Board Certification in Therapy Medical Physics from the American Board of Radiology or will be Board eligible.
Facilities:
Mevion single vault pencil beam scanning with CT on Rails imaging with roughly 50% of treated patients being pediatrics. A Varian Halcyon system with new Enhanced Cone Beam CT feature, along with a planned future upgrade to Ethos Adaptive Planning. Six total linear accelerators (4 HCH + 2 satellites), including a Varian Edge stereotactic machine with ExacTrac Dynamic and Varian Identify Surface Guidance, along with 4 other Varian True Beams. Two Siemens 64 slice large bore Dual energy CT's (one currently being installed), with 4D, iMAR and Iterative reconstruction are used for simulation within the department. Active HDR brachytherapy (Elekta-Nucletron), prostate LDR and Eye Brachy programs are in operation. Varian Eclipse, BrainLab Elements, and RaySearch external beam treatment planning systems are in use, along with Variseed for prostate seed implants, Nucletron Oncentra for HDR and Aria Record & Verify.
