Job Description:
This is a grant funded, non-tenure track position. The initial appointment will be for one year. Continuation will be dependent on funding availability, job performance, and continued need for the appointment.
Work Location: This position will be domiciled in Baton Rouge, LA at the Louisiana State University AgCenter - Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering.
Position Description: The Postdoctoral Researcher position's primary purpose is full-time research in an interdisciplinary environment focusing on digital image processing and analysis applications for evaluating grain quality, through algorithms and hardware, under the supervision of Dr. Kevin Hoffseth, Associate Professor in the LSU Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering. The employee will conduct full-time research in an interdisciplinary environment focusing on digital image processing and analysis (including close-range visible and infrared images in Precision Agriculture applications) for evaluating grain quality. The role also includes conducting research toward development of experimental imaging systems, process automation, hardware evaluation and open-source design, grain handling and transport, data pipelines and image libraries, as well as machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms. Responsibilities consist of conducting and assisting with laboratory research (in a supervised as well as an independent environment), including experimental set-up, experimental design, sample collection, and sample analysis. Responsibilities also include ordering materials and supplies, equipment maintenance, laboratory safety, and assistance with graduate and undergraduate student research, and writing of research manuscripts. In addition is expected that the successful applicant will contribute to research proposal writing for external funding.
Qualification Requirements: The applicant must have earned a PhD degree in biological engineering, agricultural engineering, computer science, physics, agronomy, plant science, or a closely related field. Strong written and oral communication skills along with the ability to work with others in a team-oriented environment are a must.
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge and skills in organization, time management, and data management are essential. Laboratory experience and expertise in image processing and analysis, mechatronics and machine design, ML/AI algorithm development, and data labeling and cleanup is desired. Additional desired qualifications include grant-writing proficiency, and experience mentoring graduate students.
