Shadowing provides a realistic view of the fast-paced, patient-centered environment and helps you understand the communication and problem-solving skills needed in the role. While direct patient care is usually not permitted for shadowers, you'll have opportunities to ask questions and reflect on the PA's responsibilities and workflow.

What is Physician Assistant shadowing?

Physician Assistant shadowing is an observational experience where individuals interested in becoming Physician Assistants (PAs) accompany practicing PAs during their workday to gain insight into the profession. Shadowing allows prospective PA students to witness the daily responsibilities, patient interactions, and healthcare settings that PAs work in. This experience helps applicants determine if the PA career is the right fit for them and is often required or recommended by PA programs as part of their application process.
