What is a physician assistant locum?

A Physician Assistant Locum is a certified medical professional who temporarily fills in for other physician assistants at clinics, hospitals, or other healthcare facilities. Locum tenens positions help maintain consistent patient care when there are staff shortages, vacations, or leaves of absence. These roles can range from a few days to several months and often require adapting quickly to new environments. Physician Assistant Locums perform the same duties as permanent PAs, including diagnosing illnesses, developing treatment plans, and prescribing medication under the supervision of a physician.

To thrive as a Physician Assistant Locum, you need a master's degree in physician assistant studies, national certification (such as the NCCPA), and state licensure. Physician Assistant Locums often encounter the challenge of quickly adjusting to different healthcare environments and workflows.
