Position: Physician Assistant – General Surgery (Surgical Experience Required)

Location: Dothan, Alabama
Schedule: Full-Time | Hospital-Based Role | Surgical & Perioperative Care

This opportunity is with a large, well-established regional health system that serves communities across southeastern Alabama, southwest Georgia, and parts of the Florida Panhandle.

Position Summary

The health system is seeking an experienced Physician Assistant with a strong background in General Surgery to join its surgical team in Dothan, Alabama.

This role includes a combination of operating room first assist, inpatient rounding, and preoperative/postoperative patient management.
You will work closely with surgeons, residents, PAs, RNs, and surgical techs in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Surgical experience is required — inpatient, OR, and procedural exposure strongly preferred.

Essential Position Responsibilities
  • Serve as first assist during general surgery procedures in the operating room

  • Provide comprehensive preoperative and postoperative care, including hospital rounding

  • Conduct patient evaluations, history and physicals, and perioperative assessments

  • Manage surgical consults and coordinate care plans with the attending surgeon

  • Perform bedside procedures as appropriate (e.g., wound care, drain removal, suturing, staple removal)

  • Provide education and counseling to patients and families

  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary care teams to ensure optimal surgical outcomes

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic health record (EHR)

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, workflow optimization, and patient safety efforts


QualificationsEducation
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program

Licensure & Certification
  • Board-Certified Physician Assistant

  • Active Alabama PA license or eligibility to obtain

  • BLS and ACLS certifications (or willingness to obtain)

Experience
  • Minimum 1–2 years of surgical experience required

  • Prior experience in general surgery, surgical subspecialties, or hospital-based roles strongly preferred

Skills
  • Strong OR first-assist capabilities

  • Excellent procedural competency and clinical judgment
