How much do phylogenetics jobs pay per hour?

As of May 31, 2026, the average hourly pay for phylogenetics in the United States is $26.34, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.14 and $30.77 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a Phylogenetics job?

A phylogenetics job involves studying the evolutionary relationships between species using genetic, morphological, and computational data. Professionals in this field analyze DNA sequences, build phylogenetic trees, and apply bioinformatics tools to understand species' ancestry and evolution. They work in academia, research institutions, healthcare, or biotechnology, often contributing to evolutionary biology, conservation, or epidemiology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Phylogenetics position, and why are they important?

To thrive in phylogenetics, you need expertise in evolutionary biology, molecular genetics, and bioinformatics, usually supported by an advanced degree in a related field. Familiarity with phylogenetic analysis software (such as MEGA, BEAST, or RAxML), programming languages like Python or R, and version control systems is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong collaboration and communication skills help set top candidates apart. These skills are vital for accurately interpreting genetic data, building evolutionary models, and effectively presenting findings to both scientific and interdisciplinary teams.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals working in phylogenetics?

Professionals in phylogenetics often confront challenges such as managing large and complex datasets, staying current with rapidly evolving analytical tools, and interpreting results that can be influenced by data quality or incomplete information. Working on collaborative projects across different disciplines and time zones can also require strong organizational and communication skills. Additionally, troubleshooting software and computational issues is a routine part of the job. These challenges offer opportunities to develop new technical skills and contribute to advancing scientific understanding, but they also require persistence and adaptability.

NYBG Job DescriptionTitleReports to

Postdoctoral Researcher in Plant Ecophysiology & Evolution

Assistant Curator

Position Summary:

The New York Botanical Garden is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher to work with an interdisciplinary team on the ecophysiology and evolution of biophotonic leaf traits in shade-adapted plants. This is a2-3 year position starting Oct 1, 2026, contingent on grant funding.

The collaborative project will integrate approaches in plant anatomy and physiology, 3D imaging and modeling, phylogenetics, photonics, machine learning, and deep learning to elucidate the sophisticated mechanisms, patterns, and principles of light harvesting in diverse, deep-shade adapted plants. The Postdoctoral Researcher will be expected to apply analytical tools in phylogenetics, collect leaf anatomical and physiological data, supervise and mentor junior scientists, and lead publications.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and implement laboratory experiments to characterize the photosynthetic response of plant leaves to different light environments.
  • Conduct phylogenetic analyses of plant trait evolution, utilizing the NYBG computing cluster.
  • Execute histological preparation and imaging of tissue samples.
  • Work with 3D microCT datasets, including machine learning analysis and generation of 3D models.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to determine the optical behavior of plant tissues, from a structural and biochemical perspective.
  • Prepare manuscripts, technical documentation, and/or project reports for peer-reviewed publication and stakeholder dissemination.
  • Engage in a collaborative postdoctoral mentoring plan.
  • Participate in NYBG Science activities, outreach, and mentoring related to the project.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • PhD by the time of the start of the appointment
  • Experience in the application of phylogenetic methods
  • Experience with plant physiology, especially leaf traits and photosynthesis
  • Coding experience (R, python, or similar)
  • Publication record showing proof of skillsets above; pre-prints acceptable
  • Experience or proven strong desire to study leaf traits, photosynthesis, plant tissue optics, understory plant ecophysiology, Begoniaceae, or other relevant research topic
  • Experience with microCT 3D imaging and analysis is a plus but not required
  • Experience with machine learning and/or deep learning is a plus but not required

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, stand, walk, sit, and usea computer extensively. Occasional travel to conferences or project meetings may be necessary.

Reasonableaccommodationsmay be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
