What is a PHP developer?

PHP developers are programmers who specialize in using the PHP scripting language to build websites, web applications, and server-side software. They typically work on the backend of web projects, creating dynamic content, integrating databases, and ensuring the website functions smoothly. PHP developers may also collaborate with front-end developers and designers to deliver complete solutions. Their work is essential for powering many popular websites and content management systems, such as WordPress.

What does a PHP developer do?

PHP is a widely used server-side scripting language, so a PHP developer has responsibilities based around developing the back-end of websites and web applications. Having some knowledge of front-end work is also necessary, as you provide support to front-end developers by implementing their changes in the applications. Your duties then include connecting these applications to web services so that they are viewable on the internet. You work with a company’s databases by connecting them to PHP, maintaining them, updating them, and ensuring everything continues to run correctly and efficiently. Databases are useful not only for data querying but also for adding common features, like search boxes, to websites. You may also be required to solve complex issues for developing and integrating data storage.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PHP developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PHP Developer, you need strong proficiency in PHP programming, web development fundamentals, and a solid understanding of databases like MySQL, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with frameworks such as Laravel or Symfony, version control systems like Git, and relevant certifications can enhance technical competency. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are key soft skills that help developers deliver robust solutions and work well within teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for building reliable, scalable web applications and adapting to evolving project requirements.

What are some common challenges PHP developers face when working on legacy codebases, and how can they address them?

PHP developers often encounter challenges when working with legacy code, such as outdated frameworks, inconsistent coding standards, and limited documentation. To address these issues, it’s important to gradually refactor code, implement automated testing, and document changes thoroughly. Collaborating closely with team members and leveraging version control systems can also help ensure smoother updates and maintainability. Being proactive about knowledge sharing and code reviews is key to overcoming these obstacles and improving the overall health of legacy PHP projects.

We’re seeking passionate, innovative minds to join our journey. Be a part of our dynamic team and let’s transform the industry together!

Senior Software Engineer – Messaging & Agentic APIs

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Full Stack – Messaging & Agentic APIs to join our Messaging team and help shape the next generation of CreatorIQ's creator communication platform. This is a full-stack role with a strong backend focus, where you'll design, build, and scale messaging capabilities that power creator communications across our platform. You'll work on both our existing infrastructure and new cloud-native services, helping modernize CreatorIQ's messaging architecture while building APIs that support web applications, external integrations, and next-generation AI agent workflows. Our current messaging platform is part of a large PHP-based monolithic application. As we continue migrating functionality into independently deployable microservices built with Node.js and TypeScript, you'll play a key role in both maintaining the existing PHP codebase and designing the future-state architecture. This requires someone who can confidently troubleshoot legacy systems while building scalable, modern backend services. In this role, you'll work on features such as business inbox integrations, custom sender identities, messaging automation, campaign-specific workflows, reliable message delivery at scale, and agent-ready APIs. While the primary focus is backend engineering, you'll also contribute to React and TypeScript front-end development when needed, collaborating closely with Product, Design, and Engineering teams to deliver high-quality end-to-end solutions. In this role, you’ll get to:

  • Design, develop, and operate scalable backend services supporting CreatorIQ’s email and messaging capabilities.
  • Understand and improve existing messaging functionality within our PHP monolith while helping migrate it into Node.js and TypeScript microservices.
  • Analyze legacy code, dependencies, and data flows to define service boundaries, APIs, data ownership, and safe migration strategies.
  • Design agent-ready APIs and capabilities that are discoverable, well-documented, predictable, and safe for use by AI agents and external integrations.
  • Build secure integrations with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and other external communication providers.
  • Develop capabilities for customer-managed inboxes, domains, sender identities, and campaign-specific messaging automation.
  • Design APIs, background jobs, queues, and event-driven workflows with reliable handling of retries, rate limits, idempotency, and provider failures.
  • Improve email authentication, deliverability, bounce and complaint processing, suppression management, and sender reputation.
  • Contribute to React and TypeScript user interfaces for messaging configuration, automation, and monitoring.
  • Improve automated testing, observability, performance, and reliability across legacy and new services.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, QA, DevOps, Architects, and other engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Review code, mentor other engineers, and use AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering efficiency and quality.
Who you are and what you’ll need for this position:
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including ownership of complex production systems from design through deployment.
  • Strong backend development skills with Node.js and TypeScript, complemented by the ability to build customer-facing applications using React and TypeScript.
  • Working knowledge of PHP, with the ability to understand, troubleshoot, and safely enhance an existing legacy codebase while contributing to its modernization.
  • Proven success modernizing legacy applications and incrementally decomposing monolithic architectures into microservices and serverless services.
  • Expertise in designing and building REST and/or GraphQL APIs, third-party integrations, and asynchronous processing workflows.
  • Ability to design APIs for machine-to-machine communication, AI agents, or automated workflows with well-defined contracts, structured schemas, predictable behavior, and robust error handling.
  • Strong understanding of relational databases, data modeling, transactions, query optimization, and scalable backend architecture.
  • Hands‑on experience implementing secure integrations using OAuth2.0, external identity providers, token management, rate limiting, retries, and resilient failure handling.
  • Proficiency with AWS or another major cloud platform, including event-driven architectures using technologies such as Kafka, AmazonSQS, SNS, or EventBridge.
  • Familiarity with messaging, email, notification, or communication platforms, including business inboxes, messaging automation, and campaign workflows.
  • Knowledge of messaging and email technologies such as Google Workspace/Gmail APIs, MicrosoftGraph/Outlook365, SMTP, AmazonSES, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC.
  • Hands‑on experience building AI-powered applications, agentic systems, or developer platforms using LLMs, AI agents, copilots, or workflow orchestration frameworks, with strong knowledge of JSONSchema, OpenAPI, function calling, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) or similar standards.
  • Experience developing messaging automation, sequencing, scheduling, or campaign orchestration capabilities is a plus.
  • Solid understanding of automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, observability, monitoring, and production support best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to independently own features from technical discovery through production rollout.
  • Upper-Intermediate (B2) or higher English proficiency, both written and spoken.
  • Confidence can sometimes hold us back from applying for a job. But we’ll let you in on a secret: there’s no such thing as a ‘perfect’ candidate. Have 50% of the criteria? Excited about this opportunity? Passionate about what we do at CreatorIQ?
