What is a PHP tech lead?

PHP Tech Leads are experienced software professionals who oversee the technical aspects of projects that use PHP, a popular server-side scripting language. They guide development teams, make architectural decisions, ensure code quality, and coordinate with stakeholders to deliver scalable and efficient web applications. In addition to strong PHP coding skills, they also mentor junior developers, manage project timelines, and help resolve technical challenges. Their role bridges the gap between hands-on development and strategic technical leadership, ensuring successful project delivery.

How does a PHP tech lead typically balance hands-on coding with leadership and mentoring responsibilities?

As a PHP Tech Lead, you'll often split your time between writing code, reviewing pull requests, and guiding your team through technical challenges. While you remain actively involved in the codebase to set standards and tackle complex problems, a significant portion of your role will involve mentoring developers, facilitating collaboration, and ensuring that projects align with architectural goals. Balancing these tasks requires strong time management and communication skills, as you serve as both a technical expert and a team leader. You can expect to lead technical discussions, support team members' growth, and help resolve blockers during sprints.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PHP tech lead, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PHP Tech Lead, you need advanced proficiency in PHP development, strong knowledge of web frameworks (such as Laravel or Symfony), and several years of hands-on experience leading technical teams. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud platforms, along with relevant certifications, is typically expected. Leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving skills are crucial soft skills for guiding teams and managing project delivery. These competencies ensure robust technical solutions, smooth team collaboration, and successful project outcomes in dynamic development environments.

Job description

This is an IN-OFFICE position in the Atlanta office.

About Phase 3 Marketing & Communications:

Founded in 2001, Phase 3 is an integrated marketing services firm, simplifying the way brands connect with their customers.
