A PHP developer designs and implements server-side web programs using the programming language PHP. This language exists across a wide variety of web applications, and its versatility makes it suitable for HTML embedding. As a PHP developer, you are in charge of designing programs and apps as well as websites. During the writing process, your duties also involve debugging and maintaining the source code in case any other developers need to make changes. Producing user documentation is another aspect of your work as a PHP developer.

What does a PHP developer do?

A PHP Developer is a software professional who specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining web applications using the PHP programming language. They are responsible for writing server-side logic, integrating databases, and ensuring the overall functionality and performance of web applications. PHP Developers often work with front-end technologies, collaborate with other developers, and troubleshoot issues to create dynamic and interactive websites. Their work is crucial for businesses and organizations that rely on web-based platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PHP developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PHP Developer, you need strong proficiency in PHP programming, web development fundamentals, and a solid understanding of databases such as MySQL, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with frameworks like Laravel or Symfony, version control systems such as Git, and knowledge of front-end technologies are typically required. Problem-solving ability, teamwork, and effective communication are important soft skills that help PHP Developers excel. These skills ensure the delivery of secure, efficient, and scalable web applications that meet client and business needs.

What are some common challenges a PHP developer might face when working on large-scale projects?

PHP Developers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges like maintaining legacy code, ensuring code scalability, and integrating with various third-party APIs or databases. In 2020, Porch Group rang the Nasdaq bell and began trading under the ticker symbol PRCH. We are looking to build a truly great company and are JUST GETTING STARTED.

Job Title: Senior Platform Engineer - AI Platform

Location: United States

Workplace Type: Remote

Job Summary

The future is bright for the Porch Group, and we'd love for you to be a part of it as our Senior Platform Engineer - AI Platform.

ISN is hiring a Senior Platform Engineer to lead AI-first platform work at the intersection of agentic systems and production infrastructure. You'll design and ship the systems that let agents and LLMs do real work inside a high-volume product - spanning scheduling, report intake, customer communication, billing workflows, and data extraction. You'll also own the foundation underneath it: our PHP application, AWS/ECS infrastructure, and MySQL/Aurora data layer. This role offers unusual latitude to define how AI works at ISN, backed by the scale and stability of Porch Group and the data of a category-leading home inspection software platform.

What You Will Do As A Senior Platform Engineer - AI Platform

  • Build AI features end to end - retrieval, context engineering, structured output, tool/function calling, and evaluation harnesses that measure whether a change actually made things better
  • Design and operate agent orchestration systems - multi-agent and multi-step workflows including task decomposition, tool routing, state and memory, retries and fallbacks, human-in-the-loop checkpoints, and guardrails against failure modes that don't look like exceptions
  • Operate non-deterministic systems responsibly - tracing, evals in CI, prompt and model versioning, token and latency budgets, model routing, and cost controls
  • Own ECS container platform operations - service definitions, task sizing, autoscaling, blue/green deploys, and orchestration for both long-running services and async workers
  • Architect AWS infrastructure - event-driven and serverless pipelines (Lambda, SQS/SNS/EventBridge), IAM and network design, all managed as infrastructure as code
  • Build and extend services in our production PHP codebase, integrating AI capability into existing product surfaces without destabilizing them
  • Drive database performance at scale - schema design, indexing, replication and read scaling, zero-downtime migrations, and query performance work across MySQL and Aurora
  • Raise the bar across the team through code review, design docs, mentorship, incident response, and on-call participation

What You Will Bring As A Senior Platform Engineer - AI Platform

  • 10+ years building and running production software, with real ownership of systems at scale
  • Demonstrated, hands-on experience shipping LLM-backed features - not just API calls, but agent orchestration, RAG, evaluation, and the operational discipline to keep them working
  • Strong PHP (8.x) skills in a mature, high-traffic codebase
  • Deep AWS architecture experience with hands-on ECS operations, infrastructure as code (Terraform or CDK), and CI/CD
  • Expert-level relational database skills with MySQL and/or Aurora - able to read an execution plan and act on it
  • Strong fundamentals in distributed systems, API design, observability, and application security
  • Clear written communication and sound judgment about tradeoffs, especially where AI is the wrong tool for the job
  • Nice to have: Go, MCP or comparable agent-tooling standards, vector search and embedding pipelines, Kubernetes, document and image extraction pipelines, or real estate/proptech/field-services domain experience

The application window for this position is anticipated to close in 2 weeks (10 business days) from 8/12/2026. Please know this may change based on business and interviewing needs.

At this time, Porch Group does not consider applicants from the following states or jurisdictions for Remote positions: Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nebraska, Montana, New Hampshire, West Virginia, or the District of Columbia.
