Job description

Lead HVAC Installer

John Nugent & Sons | Sterling, VA

Experienced HVAC installers know that completing great work takes more than technical ability. It takes accurate job information, dependable materials, strong coordination, and a company that gives its installation teams the support needed to do the job right.

John Nugent & Sons has served homeowners throughout Northern Virginia since 1975, building its reputation on quality workmanship, dependable service, and professionals who take pride in their craft.

We're looking for an experienced Lead HVAC Installer who can take ownership of residential installation projects, solve challenges in the field, and set the standard for quality and professionalism. You'll lead projects from start to finish, guide apprentices and helpers, and work closely with our sales, warehouse, service, and operations teams to keep installations moving efficiently.

This is an opportunity to join an established home services company where your experience will be respected, your leadership will make an impact, and you'll have the resources needed to deliver installations you're proud to put your name on.

What You'll Do
  • Lead residential HVAC replacement and installation projects from start to finish.

  • Install furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, air handlers, mini-splits, thermostats, and indoor air quality equipment.

  • Complete ductwork modifications, refrigerant piping, condensate drainage, venting, gas piping, wiring, and related system connections.

  • Direct, train, and support apprentices and installation helpers.

  • Review job details and identify equipment, material, or scope concerns before and during installation.

  • Perform equipment startups, charging, airflow verification, system testing, and commissioning.

  • Troubleshoot installation issues and ensure work meets manufacturer requirements, applicable codes, and company standards.

  • Protect customers' homes and maintain clean, organized, and safe jobsites.

  • Explain system operation, maintenance expectations, and warranty information to homeowners.

  • Complete accurate job documentation, equipment records, and required photos.

  • Coordinate with sales, service, dispatch, warehouse, and operations teams.

  • Maintain assigned vehicles, tools, equipment, materials, and inventory.

What We're Looking For
  • Previous experience leading residential HVAC replacement and installation projects.

  • Ability to independently complete residential HVAC installations from start to finish.

  • Strong knowledge of furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, air handlers, mini-splits, ductwork, refrigeration, airflow, venting, and system commissioning.

  • Strong troubleshooting, leadership, and jobsite problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to train, coach, and direct apprentices or installation helpers.

  • Commitment to quality workmanship, safety, and code compliance.

  • Strong communication and customer service skills.

  • EPA Universal Certification required.

  • Applicable Virginia trade licenses or certifications preferred.

  • Comfortable using tablets, mobile applications, and field service software.

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to perform physical work in attics, basements, crawl spaces, mechanical rooms, and outdoor conditions.

Why Work at John Nugent & Sons?
  • Competitive compensation based on experience

  • Performance-based earning opportunities

  • Steady, year-round installation demand

  • Strong office, warehouse, and operational support

  • Established Northern Virginia reputation dating back to 1975

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance

  • 401(k) with Company Match

  • Paid Time Off and Paid Holidays

  • Company-Provided Vehicle

  • Company Phone or Tablet

  • Uniforms Provided

  • Ongoing Paid Technical and Leadership Training

  • Career Advancement Opportunities

  • The opportunity to train and develop future HVAC professionals

  • Support from an experienced HVAC, plumbing, and electrical team

  • A professional environment that values quality, accountability, and teamwork

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means taking ownership of each installation, leading your crew effectively, and delivering clean, dependable work that performs as intended. You'll ensure every system is properly tested before completion, help develop less-experienced installers, and contribute to the quality experience that has kept Northern Virginia homeowners choosing John Nugent & Sons for generations.
