What is a photo stylist?

Photo stylists are professionals who arrange products, props, clothing, or sets for photography shoots to achieve a desired look or theme. They work closely with photographers, art directors, and clients to create visually appealing compositions that effectively convey a story or brand message. Photo stylists are skilled in selecting props, coordinating colors, and setting up scenes to ensure products or models look their best in photos. Their work is essential in industries like fashion, advertising, food photography, and editorial spreads.

What does a photo stylist do?

As a photo stylist, you help a photographer determine the mise en scène for a photo shoot. This frequently involves helping select a wardrobe for anyone in the pictures, managing props, and otherwise ensuring each image comes out as cleanly as possible. This job is particularly common in the fashion, food, and commercial products industries, but distinctly less common in areas like wildlife photography. Photo stylists often collect props from suppliers, manage lighting, set up special effects, help process and sort images from photo shoots, and otherwise support the primary photographer. Many companies use this as a type of training role for people who want to become professional photographers, and in that sense, the photo stylist role is often similar to an apprenticeship.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a photo stylist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Photo Stylist, you need a strong sense of visual aesthetics, knowledge of design principles, and experience in selecting and arranging props, backgrounds, and wardrobe, often supported by a degree in art, design, or a related field. Familiarity with photo shoot planning software, digital editing tools like Adobe Photoshop, and inventory management systems is important. Creativity, attention to detail, adaptability, and strong communication skills help a photo stylist collaborate effectively with photographers, clients, and creative teams. These skills ensure visually compelling images that meet client objectives and stand out in competitive markets.

How does a photo stylist typically collaborate with photographers and creative teams during a shoot?

Photo stylists work closely with photographers, art directors, and sometimes clients to develop and execute a visual concept for a shoot. They are responsible for sourcing props, selecting backgrounds, and arranging items to create the desired aesthetic, often adapting on the spot to meet creative direction or overcome unexpected challenges. Effective communication and flexibility are key, as stylists must ensure that every element aligns with the overall vision while staying within budget and time constraints. This collaborative environment provides valuable opportunities to learn from other creative professionals and expand one’s portfolio.

What is the difference between Photo Stylist vs Wardrobe Stylist?

AspectPhoto StylistWardrobe Stylist

Work EnvironmentPhoto shoots, studios, commercial settingsFashion shows, personal styling, retail
Industry UsageAdvertising, editorial, commercial photographyFashion retail, personal styling, wardrobe consulting

While both roles involve styling, a Photo Stylist focuses on selecting and arranging items for photoshoots, ensuring visual appeal in images. A Wardrobe Stylist works with clients or brands to select clothing for events, campaigns, or personal use. The roles overlap in fashion knowledge and styling skills but differ mainly in their work environment and end goals.

How do you become a photo stylist?

To become a photo stylist, you typically need experience in styling, art, or design, along with strong knowledge of fashion, props, and visual storytelling. Many photo stylists gain skills through internships, assistant roles, or relevant education such as art or photography courses. Proficiency with tools like Adobe Photoshop and good organizational skills are also important for success in the field.

Photo Stylist - Non-Apparel

Natural Life

Jacksonville Beach, FL • On-site

Full-time

Medical, Life

Posted 16 days ago

Key responsibilities

  • Style Natural Life's products for e-commerce, campaigns, and marketing content by building compositions, sourcing props, and collaborating with photographers.

  • Make products look their best on camera, whether through flat lays, still-life arrangements, or simple styling, while maintaining brand personality.

  • Work closely with the Creative Services Team and leadership to develop visual concepts and ensure imagery aligns with Natural Life's brand identity.

Job description

PHOTO STYLIST - NON-APPAREL

Natural Life is looking for someone with an exceptional eye. Someone who can take a mug, trinket dish, tote bag, blanket, tent — or just about anything else we make — and turn it into a photograph that feels special! You instinctively understand color, pattern, composition, scale, texture, and propping. You know when a flat lay needs one more unexpected element — and when it needs three things removed. You can make a simple product feel irresistible without losing sight of what we're actually selling. Most importantly, you understand that great styling isn't just about making something pretty. It's about creating an image that feels unmistakably Natural Life: colorful, happy, creative, optimistic, a little unexpected, and full of personality — and tells the story of the product!
Natural Life is growing fast, and our product assortment gets bigger and more exciting every year. We've worked with great outside styling talent, and now we're ready to invest in bringing that expertise in-house. This is a chance for a truly talented product stylist to help shape how Natural Life looks as we continue to grow.
What You'll Do
  • You'll style Natural Life's lifestyle, home, gift, and accessory products for e-commerce and product photography, creative flat lays, single-product photography, campaign and lifestyle shoots, seasonal launches, and website, email, social, and other brand marketing content.
  • You'll take products ranging from small gifts and accessories to larger lifestyle items and figure out how to make each one look its absolute best on camera — whether that means building a layered, colorful flat lay, finding the perfect unexpected prop, or keeping the styling incredibly simple. You'll source and select props, build compositions, collaborate closely with photographers, and continually think about how our imagery can feel fresh while staying true to Natural Life.
  • You'll work closely with our Founder/CEO, Brand Leaders and our Creative Services Team. Depending on your experience and interests, there's room for this role to grow over time into broader creative responsibilities including concept development, mood boards, shoot direction, and helping define the visual language of Natural Life photography.
What We're Looking For
We care much more about how good you are than how long you've been doing it. Whether you've been styling for four years or fifteen, what matters most is your eye, your ideas, and your portfolio. We're looking for someone who:
  • Has genuinely exceptional visual taste and a strong creative point of view
  • Understands composition, proportion, color, pattern, texture, and scale
  • Is fantastic at styling flat lays and still-life product photography
  • Knows how to use props creatively without overpowering the product
  • Understands how to make a product photograph feel interesting and commercially effective
  • Can take everyday objects and make them feel special, aspirational, and desirable
  • Has an instinct for creating images that feel layered, unexpected, and full of personality
  • Can work across many different product categories and still create a cohesive brand point of view
  • Understands the difference between following a trend and creating something that feels fresh
  • Is highly creative, resourceful, and constantly noticing interesting objects, textures, materials, and visual ideas
  • Can work quickly, experiment freely, and make confident decisions on set
  • Is collaborative, curious, kind, and easy to work with
The biggest thing we're looking for? You understand brands. You can look at Natural Life and understand what makes us different — and then translate that feeling into photography. We don't want every image to look the same, but we do want someone who can look at an image and immediately think: "That feels like Natural Life."
Your portfolio matters much more to us than a perfect résumé. If your work makes us stop, zoom in, smile, or want to buy the product — we want to see it!
Why You'll Love It Here
  • Creative and inspiring workspace at our Jacksonville Beach office.
  • A dedicated, purpose-driven team that lives the Natural Life mission.
  • Casual, colorful environment with good vibes and dog-friendly energy.
  • Competitive pay and a thoughtful benefits package designed to support your health, time off, and well-being.
  • A generous employee discount on Natural Life products.
  • A chance to grow with a fast-paced, female-founded brand with heart!
