Job description

Department Overview

The Postdoctoral Scholar will conduct scientific and clinical translational research in the field of biomedical optical imaging and ophthalmology. The postdoc will develop next generation optical coherence tomography (OCT) technologies for structural and functional assessment of the eye in healthy and disease conditions. The postdoc will also work closely with ophthalmologists and clinical fellows to translate the developed imaging technology and biomarker in clinical studies for disease diagnosis, monitoring, and to facilitate the development of new therapeutics.

Function/Duties of Position

Design, build, and maintain prototype ophthalmic imaging instruments. Develop software algorithm to extract structural and functional imaging markers. The postdoc is expected to work both independently and as a team, demonstrating innovative thinking and practical problem-solving skills. The postdoc should maintain good record and documentation of the design, implementation, and experimental results of the developed technology.

Plan and oversee IRB approved clinical studies. The postdoc is expected to work with ophthalmologists, fellows and coordinates on studies involving human subjects. The postdoc should demonstrate good scientific and research ethics, and follow the university and NIH guidelines on clinical studies.

Author manuscripts summarizing study results in peer-reviewed scientific and clinical journals. Present key findings in national and international conferences. Contribute to the preparation of patents and grant applications.

Collaborate and mentor graduate research assistants (e.g., PhD students)

Required Qualifications

PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Optics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.

Experience in one or more of the following areas: OCT, image processing, statistics, programing (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C/C++), machine learning, optical design (e.g., Zemax).

Strong organizational and multitasking skills are critical.  The successful candidate must be able to work well independently and assume responsibility for specific phases of research projects. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work well with team members are essential. Strong problem-solving skills and creative thinking is essential.  Familiarity with image processing, image grading, research design, statistics and the use of computers for research is highly desirable. Expert knowledge of programming languages.  Ability to work independently; willingness to serve as a positive and professional role model. 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with clinical ophthalmic imaging using OCT and/or other optical imaging modalities are highly desirable
