Pediatric Pain Specialist (Anesthesiology, Psychology, Physiatry, or Neurology; Associate or Full Professor)

The Children's National Fateh Center for Pain Management is leading a nationwide search for a visionary leader with expertise in pediatric anesthesiology, neurology, or psychology, and experience in pediatric pain management, to serve as Center Director (PhD or MD/DO). The Director will build and lead a multi-disciplinary, integrated team with expertise in areas including anesthesiology, psychology, neurology, pain management, behavioral, occupational and physical therapy, nursing, nutrition, and more. The Director will provide strategic leadership, fostering a collaborative environment that integrates evidence-based care with innovative research and high-quality educational programs.

The Children's National Fateh Center for Pain Management seeks to establish a multidisciplinary pediatric pain rehabilitation program to serve the children of the DC, Maryland, and Virginia regions with a primary goal of rapid functional restoration.  The Center will foster a high-intensity, interdisciplinary, function-first treatment model for children with severe pain-related disability, focusing on intensive PT/OT, psychological therapy, and behavioral restructuring.  The Center's care will be delivered in an outpatient setting, with patient cohorts running all day for ~20 consecutive weekdays (4 weeks).

The center is under development and is set to open in late 2027 in Rockville, MD..

Key Responsibilities:

•  Leadership & Strategy: Develop and implement the strategic vision for the Fateh Center for Pain Management, ensuring alignment with the Children's National Hospital's mission and strategic plan

•  Program Development and Clinical Direction: Oversee the delivery of evidence-based assessments and treatments for chronic pain conditions. Manage and grow the clinical services.

• Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Partner with pain management specialists to develop, review, and optimize integrative, treatment models.

• Education & Mentorship: Direct didactic seminars, workshops, and case conferences; supervise early career team members as well as trainees.

• Research & Scholarship: Engage in and lead scholarly activities, including publication and funded research related to pain management.

• Administration: Manage staff hiring, retention, and performance; collaborate with hospital administration to allocate resources.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: MD, DO, PhD, or PsyD (in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited program).

• Licensure: Physicians must be board certified in anesthesiology, neurology or physiatry and have completed fellowships in pain management or equivalent.  Psychologists must have attended an APA-accredited PhD/PsyD program in clinical psychology, health psychology (pediatric behavioral medicine), or comparable training program and completed an APA-accredited internship. All applicants must be licensed in DC/MD or license eligible (license required upon hire).
• Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years of clinical and administrative experience in pain management, preferably in an academic medical center. Record of peer-reviewed publications and preferably grant funding.
• Expertise: Demonstrated expertise and experience in a pediatric pain rehabilitation program.
• Leadership Skills: Proven experience in program development, personnel management, and interdisciplinary team collaboration, with experience of program and budget oversight.

Required Skills/Knowledge

• Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in the area of expertise.

• Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care.
  Ability to function independently in evaluating patient problems and developing a plan for patient care.

• Ability to incorporate ethical concepts into patient care and discuss these with the patient, family, and other members of the health care team.

• Ability to supervise, advice, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise.

• Ability to maintain quality, safety , and/or infection control standards.

• Demonstrates a personal commitment to Continuing Medical Education and remains current on the developments and progress in his/her subspecialty.
  Demonstrates knowledge of and complies with legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care.
  

Required Licenses and Certifications

• Fully licensed and credentialed attending staff category physician on the medical staff of Children's National Hospital (Required)

• Board certification in relevant secondary specialty (Preferred) Upon Hire (Required)

Functional Accountabilities
Operations

• Hiring/Onboarding/Orientation - Assist in the recruitment and interview process for new hires. Provide guidance during the credentialing/onboarding process and provide orientation to the site

• Schedule - Manage schedule requests and build daily schedule while aligning with the master schedule at CNH. Facilitate coverage when there are gaps or call outs.

• Staff Management - Conduct regular staff meetings to provide situational updates and allow discussion. Provide regular reminders and updates on key topics or events.

Program Development and Quality Assurance 

• Quality/Process Improvement - Identify and implement quality and process improvement initiatives as needed. Assist with updates and development of policies and protocols.

• Clinical Care - Review clinical care issues and concerns that arise. Identify systems/process with opportunities to improve and implement changes and growth of the program as needed. Provide regular feedback and updates to the team.
• Subspecialty and Multidisciplinary Care - Collaborate with subspecialists and multidisciplinary teams to support and provide excellent, evidence-based pediatric palliative care to patients in the hospital.

Professional Development and Mentorship

• Promote and support the professional development of members in the group through guidance and mentorship.

Education

• Physician/Community - Facilitate and coordinate pediatric palliative care educational opportunities for physicians and providers both within the team as well as other departments and in the surrounding community.

• Multidisciplinary - In collaboration with unit managers and educators, facilitate and support pediatric palliative care educational opportunities for multidisciplinary staff as needed.

Professional Growth

• Actively pursue professional growth and development through involvement in appropriate national professional organizations by holding elective office, participate in workshops and/or serve on committees.

• Achieve academic advancement through peer-reviewed publication, abstract submission, and participation in research relevant to pediatric chronic pain management.

• Student/Resident - Oversee and provide support to the GME office at CNH. Facilitate conversations to support other trainee educational initiatives.

Deliverables

• Participate in regular department and hospital-wide committees to potentially include, but not limited to: Ethics, Provider wellbeing, opioid stewardship

• Develop Annual PANDA palliative care strategic planning

• Compile and submit annual Performance Metrics to senior leadership
