Position: Literacy Coach
Overview
The Literacy Instruction Coach will provide support in classroom management, lesson planning, and behavior management while promoting best practices in literacy instruction. The literacy instructional coach will increase the quality and effectiveness of the classroom instruction through observation and feedback, lesson modeling, co-teaching, mentoring, and facilitating academic reflection. The coach will assist in implementing a plan for targeted support using evidence-based literacy practices aligned with the Science of Reading to meet the needs of all students. This position involves working closely with teachers, students, and parents to develop effective literacy programs and strategies that foster a love for reading and writing. The Literacy Coach will provide support in classroom management, lesson planning, and behavior management while promoting best practices in literacy instruction.
The Literacy Coach is a key instructional leader whose primary responsibility is to provide literacy training and support to administrators and teachers. This role is critical in building capacity for evidence-based literacy instruction aligned with the science of reading.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide coaching and professional development to teachers and school leaders in effective literacy instruction.
- Support the implementation of reading programs and practices grounded in the science of reading.
- Collaborate with school staff to analyze student literacy data and inform instruction.
- Facilitate professional learning communities focused on literacy development.
- Serve as a literacy resource for school improvement planning.
Qualifications:
- Valid Indiana teaching license.
- Proven experience in literacy instruction and/or coaching.
- Strong knowledge of the science of reading and evidence-based instructional strategies.
Additional Requirements (Effective July 1, 2027):
- Must earn Indiana’s Early Literacy Endorsement, which includes:
- Completion of 80 hours of evidence-based professional development aligned with the science of reading.
- A passing score on Praxis 5205.
- Participation in professional development programs such as the Indiana Literacy Cadre may be applied toward the 80-hour requirement.
- Coaches are encouraged to engage in ongoing professional learning beyond cadre participation, including training offered through the IDOE’s partnership with Keys to Literacy.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lead and influence adult learners.
- Expertise in using data to drive instruction.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with teachers to design and implement effective literacy curricula tailored to diverse student needs.
- Conduct classroom observations and provide constructive feedback to enhance instructional practices.
- Facilitate professional development workshops focused on literacy education strategies and classroom management techniques.
- Assist in the development of individualized learning plans for students requiring additional support in literacy skills.
- Monitor student progress through assessments and data analysis, adjusting instructional strategies as needed.
- Engage with parents and the community to promote literacy initiatives and encourage reading at home.
- Stay current with research-based practices in literacy education and share findings with staff.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Proven experience in classroom teaching, preferably within a private school setting.
- Strong background in literacy education, including knowledge of Science of Reading
- Familiarity with behavior management techniques and academic advising practices.
- Proficient in lesson planning and implementing effective instructional strategies.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage effectively with students, staff, and parents.
- A passion for fostering a positive learning environment that promotes student success in literacy.
