Phd In Genetics information

What is the difference between Phd In Genetics vs Genetic Counselor?

AspectPhd In GeneticsGenetic Counselor
Required CredentialsPhD in Genetics or related fieldMaster's in Genetic Counseling, certification (ABGC)
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academia, biotech companiesHospitals, clinics, healthcare settings
Industry UsageResearch, academia, biotech industryHealthcare, patient counseling

While a Phd In Genetics focuses on research, experimentation, and advancing genetic knowledge, a Genetic Counselor primarily provides patient support, risk assessment, and genetic testing guidance. Both roles require understanding genetics but serve different professional and industry needs.

Can I be a geneticist with a PhD?

Yes, a PhD in Genetics is typically required to become a geneticist, especially for research, academic, or specialized roles. Additional skills such as laboratory techniques, data analysis, and knowledge of genetic tools are also important for success in the field.

What can I do with a PhD in genetics?

A PhD in genetics prepares individuals for research roles in academia, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare, where they analyze genetic data, develop new technologies, or study genetic diseases. Graduates often work as research scientists, genetic counselors, or in regulatory and policy positions, utilizing skills in laboratory techniques, data analysis, and scientific communication.

Job description

Department:
SOM KC Department of Microbiology, Molecular Genetic and Immunology
Tse LabPosition Title:
Post-Doc Fellow - Tse LabJob Family Group:
Professional StaffJob Description Summary:
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Hubert Tse in the Department of Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, and Immunology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Our research program seeks to increase our understanding of the immunological and molecular mechanisms involved in autoimmune dysregulation in Type 1 diabetes (T1D). Through the use of novel murine models of T1D, human translational studies, and innovative technologies including spatial transcriptomics, single cell RNA-sequencing, and induced-pluripotent stem cells, we are interested in determining how reactive oxygen species (ROS) synthesis contributes to innate immune responses and autoreactive T cell effector mechanisms involved in pancreatic โ€ข -cell destruction. Additional research projects in the lab include the use of novel immunoprotection strategies to delay islet transplantation rejection and to define the role of insulin-producing โ€ข -cells in T1D. We seek a motivated, creative, and energetic applicant with excellent communication skills and organization. The laboratory uses immunological methods, molecular biology, cellular biochemistry, redox biology, murine models, imaging, and flow cytometry to discover and evaluate new mechanisms of autoimmune dysregulation. If interested, please send a letter describing your research experience/interest/future career aspirations, your CV, and contact information for three references.Job Description:
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct mentored research in induced-pluripotent stem cell-derived macrophages to examine their ability to delay autoimmune responses. Perform spatial transcriptomics to increase our understanding of the role of b-cells in Type 1 diabetes.
  • Perform data analysis, prepare data for presentations (oral and written), write manuscripts and other research documents.

Compliance: Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Department of Microbiology, understand and follow all assigned duties, and attend regularly scheduled research team meetings.
Postdoc Expectations: The Postdoc will be expected to complete research projects under the guidance of the faculty mentor, record and interpret the results of their experiments in an (electronic) laboratory notebook, prepare publication-quality manuscripts (including figures and tables) and publish in peer-reviewed literature.
  • Read literature articles, develop new ideas, and assimilate the information into his/her project design/interpretation.
  • Dissemination of studies: Interact on a regular basis with their faculty mentor and members of the laboratory to discuss experimental design and interpretation of results.
  • Present research aims and findings at department seminars and at scientific meetings. Write and publish their results as first author in abstracts, manuscripts, and posters.
  • Submit fellowship applications, as eligible, to bolster research funding and CV building for projects.
