Primary Purpose of Position
The Department of Psychology within the John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T) invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Chair. The Department Chair position is a 12-month position that reports to the Dean of the Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences and serves as the department's chief administrative and academic leader.
The Department Chair will be expected to provide visionary leadership of innovative programs with a strong educator-researcher emphasis. In addition to the general oversight of the department, they will be responsible for strategic planning; budget development, management, and allocation; recruitment and retention of faculty and students; faculty, staff, and student development; management and improvement of curricula; evaluating faculty performance; program assessments and reviews, obtaining and maintaining accreditation; developing external partnerships; interacting with other departments and university leaders to represent the goals of the department. The Department Chair must implement strategies to develop research infrastructure. Other responsibilities include overseeing course schedules, faculty evaluations, and supervision of departmental staff, as well as providing leadership and vision for the department. The chair is also expected to conduct research in their area of expertise and publish in refereed journals and/or conference proceedings, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses within the Department (reduced teaching load) and serving on departmental, college, and university-level committees.
The successful candidate must possess: (a) a doctoral degree in Psychology, (b) experience that will support appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, a minimum of three years of experience in an administrative or management position and academic institution with comparable profile, (d) a minimum of three years teaching at the collegiate level at an institution that emphasized teaching, scholarly productivity, and engagement within their discipline, and (e) a strong record of extramural funding.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
N.C. A&T is a public, land-grant, doctoral research institution and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade. With an enrollment of 14,311 students in Fall 2024, the university offers 59 undergraduate degree programs, 36 master's programs, and 12 doctoral programs. It is America's top producer of Black graduates in Engineering and Agricultural Science bachelor's programs, as well as a top five producer in numerous additional disciplines, including Liberal Arts and Communications/Journalism. It also ranks no. 3 in master's degrees awarded to Black graduates in Engineering Technologies and Related Fields, no. 4 in master's degrees in Engineering, and no. 11 best business school for women in the nation.
Nationally recognized for its leadership and excellence in STEM education and research, N.C. A&T is classified as "R2-High Research Activity" in the Carnegie Classifications and is poised to achieve "R1-Very High Research Activity" status. The College of Health and Human Sciences comprises six departments and the School of Nursing. The College offers the following undergraduate degree programs; Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Services Management, Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. At the graduate level, the College offers four graduate degree programs including the Masters in Physician Assistant Studies (PA program), Master of Social Work (MSW), Master of Science in Health Psychology and PhD in Social Work. Three additional doctoral programs are being developed; Doctor of Nurse practice (DNP), PhD in Applied Psychology, and PhD in Sociology. The HCHHS is also home to the Center of Excellence in Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research (CIHDER), a hub for multidisciplinary research and community engagement efforts to alleviate health inequities. The HCHHS capitalizes on the synergistic relationships between these departments to develop advanced academic programming, enhance the mentoring of trainees, and conduct collaborative multidisciplinary research and scholastic activity.
The Department of Psychology is a supportive community of committed faculty and practitioners whose goals are to introduce students to the ideas and concepts relevant to this discipline, encourage interdisciplinary learning, prepare students for study in graduate schools, prepare students for entry-level jobs requiring knowledge in psychology, and train students to conduct both basic and applied research. These goals are reached through quality classroom instruction, departmental colloquia, departmental student organizations, internship opportunities through independent study, and individualized research projects. The Department of Psychology has 840 enrolled undergraduate students and 30 students in the MS in Health Psychology. A new PhD program in Applied Psychology is underdevelopment with the first cohort of students enrolling in Fall 2025. The department seeks a dynamic and visionary leader who will build upon the department's strengths to provide exceptional educational experiences, recruit and develop outstanding faculty, promote faculty-driven scholarship, and support graduate education.

Minimum Requirements
PhD in psycology from an accredited program.
The successful candidate must possess: (a) a doctoral degree in Psychology, (b) experience that will support appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, a minimum of three years of experience in an administrative or management position and academic institution with comparable profile, (d) a minimum of three years teaching at the collegiate level at an institution that emphasized teaching, scholarly productivity, and engagement within their discipline, and (e) a strong record of extramural funding. The ability to work collaboratively, inclusively, and communicate effectively with diverse students, faculty, staff, and external constituencies is required, as well as familiarity with student recruitment and retention.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Outstanding record of scholarly and professional achievement in social work and experience in fundraising and extramural funding is preferred.
