The Exercise Physiologist - Wellness screens, assesses, conducts tests of physiological measures and applying clinical reasoning to ensure the safety and appropriateness of exercise and physical activity interventions. Physical activity interventions will encompass a diverse range of people who could be potentially high risk, have an acute/chronic disease, require injury prevention, pre- and post-surgery management, cardiac rehabilitation, or athletic performance. Required to work under the supervision of the Clinical Training Manager.
The Exercise Physiologist - Wellness
  • Develops clinical exercise prescription for those with existing chronic and complex medical conditions and injuries. Perform functional assessments and evaluate movement capacity in people of all ages and levels of health.
  • Develops and maintains safe, effective individualized exercise interventions and advice for people following the acute stage of injury, surgical intervention, or during recovery to restore functional capacity and well-being.
  • Leads programs in both private and group settings. Communicate effectively while facilitating training sessions and demonstrate proper technique when appropriate. Monitor participants for inappropriate responses to exercise.
  • Utilizes appropriate and current clinical exercise techniques to effectively assess and treat injuries and other medical needs. Maintain education and knowledge of injury prevention, clinical assessments, human anatomy/physiology, therapeutic modalities, and medical terminology.
  • Ensures a high quality of data collection in functional testing. Provide clear and timely progress reports and concerns to referring clinicians. Maintain accurate records in both EPIC and exercise training programs. Create training reports in a timely manner.
  • Updates information, record appointments, and manage time effectively.
  • Monitors equipment quality and notify Director of Operations if any unusable equipment is found
  • Works collaboratively and communicate effectively with other staff members, providers, participants and community members.
  • Work with clients who are at risk of developing or may have existing medical conditions or injuries. Objective is to prevent or manage acute, sub-acute or chronic disease or injury to restore optimal physical function, health or wellness.
    Interventions are exercise-based and include physical activity and support.
  • Must be able to work autonomously across a variety of areas and target pathologies including but not limited to cancer, cardiovascular, kidney, mental health, musculoskeletal, neurological, neuromuscular, respiratory and pulmonary conditions.

What We Require:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Sports Medicine or related field is required.
Experience: 2 years recent and relevant experience required.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Personal training certification or certified exercise physiologist or certified clinical exercise physiologist or certified strength and conditioning specialist from a nationally recognized organization such as ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NSCA, or Cooper Institute is required. Carilion approved specialty training certifications: orthopedic, movement disorder, Parkinsons disease, multiple sclerosis and cancer are required 90-days of hire.
Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP
Other Minimum Qualifications: Desire to work within a comprehensive health care team. Excellent organizational, oral and written communication skills. The ability to work independently is required. Commitment to a healthy lifestyle as a model for participants and staff.
