What is a phased array?

A Phased Array job typically involves working with phased array antenna technology, which is used in radar, communications, and medical imaging applications. Engineers and technicians in this field design, develop, test, and maintain phased array systems to improve performance and signal accuracy. Responsibilities may include RF engineering, signal processing, hardware integration, and troubleshooting system issues. These roles are common in industries such as aerospace, defense, telecommunications, and healthcare.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the phased array position?

To thrive in a Phased Array Engineering role, a strong foundation in RF engineering, signal processing, and electromagnetic theory is essential, usually supported by a relevant degree such as electrical engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools like HFSS or CST, programming in MATLAB or Python, and certifications like IEEE membership are highly valued. Problem-solving abilities, effective teamwork, and strong communication skills help distinguish top candidates. These skills are crucial for designing, optimizing, and integrating advanced phased array systems used in radar, communications, and medical imaging industries.

What are some typical challenges faced by phased array engineers on the job?

Phased Array Engineers commonly face challenges related to the complexity of antenna design, such as optimizing performance while managing size, cost, and power constraints. They often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—working closely with hardware, software, and systems engineers—to integrate their arrays into larger systems. Daily tasks may involve troubleshooting unwanted signal interference or ensuring synchronization across multiple channels. Overcoming these hurdles requires both technical expertise and strong communication to deliver reliable, high-performance phased array solutions.

Job description

As an Advanced Mechanical Design Engineer here at Honeywell Aerospace, you will design and develop advanced mechanical systems, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and drive innovation in mechanical design and product performance. You will report directly to our Engineering Manager, and you'll work out of our Phoenix, AZ location on a Hybrid work schedule.
Be part of a team that applies its expertise and knowledge to mechanical projects, finding innovative, cost-effective means for improving products and technologies, and the techniques and procedures used to design and validate them. Honeywell Aerospace is implementing advanced acoustic technologies in our broad array of aerospace products and their installations including gas turbine engines, valves, motor-driven fans, environmental control systems, and electronics. Dramatic improvements in the fidelity and speed of simulations used in our product design and validation processes are essential to shorten development cycles while meeting customer requirements.
You will be tasked with improving aero-acoustic analysis and test methods and supporting product design efforts with such methods. This includes the development of custom software tools and refinement of methods used with commercial off the shelf (COTS) tools. You will be expected to identify and advocate for improvements to existing COTS tools with our vendors, and to continuously monitor the industry for better tools and evaluate them for potential use.
In addition to methods development work, you will help design products to meet customer needs while ensuring product quality and manufacturability at the lowest possible cost and weight. You will design and analyze acoustic aspects of our product components including source noise (e.g. fan/compressor, combustor, turbine, jet, valve, electric motor), and acoustic treatment (e.g. liners, mufflers). You will also direct the design, build and acoustic testing of prototype and early production hardware and may serve as a project manager for smaller development projects.
Some products you'll support include export-controlled technology and therefore may only be supported by US Persons. Frequent interaction with internal and external customers will require proficient English writing, speaking and presenting skills. Your work will be integral to satisfying current customers and securing future business by consistently meeting or exceeding Voice of Customer requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Maintaining and improving acoustic analysis and test tools
  • Performing acoustic analyses
  • Performing acoustic testing

  • Familiarity with general purpose analysis software like Matlab and Python, and product design software such as NX, Creo, Catia
  • Demonstrated mastery of MS Office software
  • Demonstrated hardware development program experience & success
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with little supervision, consistently taking the initiative to get things done, doing things before being asked by others or being forced to by events
  • Good knowledge of the aerospace industry and products
  • Ability to convey subtle or complex messages clearly both in writing and verbally, as appropriate for the topic and audience
  • Willingness to put in the effort required to get the job done

Due to compliance with U.S. export control laws and regulations, candidate must be a U.S. Person, which is defined as, a U.S. citizen, a U.S. permanent resident, or have protected status in the U.S. under asylum or refugee status or have the ability to obtain an export authorization.
