Job description

UPMC Children's Hospital is hiring full-time Pharmacy Technicians/Trainees for their outpatient pharmacy, Pint Size! All experience levels are welcomed and encouraged to apply! Candidates may be considered for either a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee title based on their education, previous pharmacy experience, and qualifications. The Pharmacy Technician Trainee role is designed for candidates who are new to pharmacy and do not have prior pharmacy experience.

Both positions are eligible for a $5,000 Sign on Bonus!

These are full-time positions, working 40 hours per week, typically in 8-hour shifts. Pint Size is staffed Monday - Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Weekend shifts are required and are staffed on both Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A perk of these positions is that you will have all major holidays off!

In this role, you will support pharmacy operations and patient care by assisting with medication preparation, filling, stocking, organization, and distribution within the UPMC Health System. Pharmacy team members work under the supervision of licensed pharmacists and follow Department of Health, The Joint Commission, State Board of Pharmacy, and departmental regulations and guidelines.

Responsibilities

Assist in filling medication orders through accurate labeling, counting, stocking, and documentation practices.

Support the preparation of medications for the correct patient and appropriate administration time, using proper technique and following all applicable safety standards.

Participate in medication distribution, including medication cassettes, emergency medication carts, controlled substances, unit stock, automated dispensing machines, and other pharmacy areas as assigned.

Retrieve discontinued medications and return or credit them to the appropriate pharmacy area when needed.

Maintain clean, organized, and adequately stocked work areas.

Provide information to hospital personnel, patients, and visitors by phone, in person, or in writing, while referring all drug information questions to a pharmacist.

Ensure medications are safely and securely stored according to regulatory and departmental requirements.

Use pharmacy computer systems to process and maintain patient information, inventory, and required records.

Maintain required documentation, including logs, inventory records, and other pharmacy records.

Comply with applicable federal and state laws and regulations, including HIPAA, OSHA, CMS, and fraud, waste, and abuse requirements.

Assist with inventory management, automated medication systems, emergency boxes, crash carts, and departmental quality improvement activities as assigned.

Perform other duties as assigned and in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors.

Pharmacy Technician Trainee: Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent is required. This title is intended for candidates with no previous pharmacy experience. For Pennsylvania locations, registration as a Pharmacy Trainee with the State Board of Pharmacy is required.

Pharmacy Technician: Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with one of the following: completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program; six months of previous pharmacy technician experience; six months of experience as a Pharmacy Assistant within the UPMC Health System; or enrollment in an undergraduate pharmacy program in good standing.

Licensure, Registration, and Certification

PA State Board of Pharmacy registration is required for all Pennsylvania locations. If an individual has a Pharmacy Intern license, they do not need to register with the State of Pennsylvania. Registration requirements are dependent on the state in which the employee works. Additional business unit criteria may apply, such as a valid driver's license and automobile insurance.
