Job Description:
The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions statewide, which house approximately 5,800 inmates. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). DUTIES:
* Fills and dispenses medication orders according to the prescription; dispenses pharmaceutical items and other medical items, such as: IV fluids, medical supplies, diagnostic supplies and stock medications.
* Assesses prescription appropriateness and legibility; ensures proper dosage and compatibility of prescribed medications.
* Inspects wards and drug stations for adequacy of drug stock; inspects pharmaceuticals for proper labeling and storage, expiration dates, effective strength, sanitary condition, and security measures; takes periodic inventories of pharmaceutical supplies; recommends condemnation of obsolete stock; selects proper storage for drugs and chemicals with regard to humidity, permissible storage time, temperature, and light sensitivity.
* Confers with physicians, nurses, and other health care personnel on drug indications, contra-indications, incompatibility of certain drugs, side effects, adverse reactions, and alternate medications; provides information to medical and health care staff on the availability of new drugs and pharmaceuticals.
* Maintains records for drugs, including narcotics, depressants, and stimulants, pharmaceuticals in accordance with applicable state and federal laws, hospital regulations, accreditation standards, and professional pharmaceutical ethics.
* Reviews patient records to observe and control inappropriate therapy and drug reactions; maintains patient profiles, noting drug doses, interactions, lab work, diets, vaccinations, treatments, and allergies.
* Monitors quality control processes within the pharmacy and actively participates in establishing quality standards to ensure demonstrated acceptable levels of services and product quality; provides information for and utilized clinical expertise/judgment in conducting quality control studies and drug utilization reviews to ensure optimal individual medication therapy.
* Provides drug information/consultation and in-service educational programs to health care staff; serves as a resource person to the institution in providing current drug information.
* May assist in the revision and maintenance of drug protocols and pharmacy formulary.

Requirements/Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of pharmacy. Computer experience is desirable.
Preferred Qualifications: Completion of a residency and/or board certification is preferred.
Other: Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the pre-employment medical examination and a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid Nebraska Department of Correctional Services' Pre-service Training Program.
