What does a pharmaceutical development technician do?

A Pharmaceutical Development Technician assists in the research and creation of new medications by supporting scientists and engineers in laboratories. Their tasks often include preparing chemical solutions, operating and maintaining lab equipment, running experiments, and recording data. They play a vital role in ensuring the quality, safety, and effectiveness of pharmaceutical products during the development process. Attention to detail and adherence to strict safety and regulatory standards are essential in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pharmaceutical development technician?

To thrive as a Pharmaceutical Development Technician, you need a solid background in chemistry, biology, or a related science, usually supported by an associate's or bachelor's degree. This role works closely with lab engineers, other technicians, and the lab coordinator to ensure all tests are completed accurately, documented properly, and finished on time in accordance with GLP, GDP, and GMP standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform product testing in accordance with established test methods and laboratory procedures.

  • Support a gastric testing project for pre-development work on digestive health products by completing required daily tests, including on designated holidays.

  • Use laboratory equipment safely and correctly to conduct testing, including pH measurements and other relevant analytical techniques.

  • Record test results accurately and promptly, maintaining clear and organized data and documentation.

  • Comply with GLP (Good Laboratory Practice), GDP (Good Documentation Practice), and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) guidelines after training.

  • Participate as an active team member in testing activities, collaborating with lab engineers, other technicians, and the lab coordinator.

  • Work with some supervision initially and progress to performing tasks independently once trained.

  • Enter test data into the laboratory information management system (LIMS) when required.

  • Perform other laboratory-related duties as assigned to support overall project and lab objectives.

Essential Skills

  • 0–3 years of experience performing testing and/or inspection in a laboratory setting or manufacturing environment.

  • Data entry skills with attention to accuracy and completeness.

  • Average verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to ask questions when uncertain.

  • Ability to work independently once fully trained while still functioning effectively as part of a team.

  • Willingness and ability to comply with GLP, GDP, and GMP requirements after training.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for data entry and result tracking.

  • Experience or coursework in Chemistry or related scientific fields that supports understanding of analytical testing.

  • Familiarity with quality control processes and documentation practices in a laboratory or manufacturing setting.

  • Comfort working with class III medical device products and pre-development test protocols.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tests and priorities within defined timelines.

The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, with a flexible start time between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Certain tests are required every day, including some holidays, and up to approximately four hours of testing may be needed on those days, after which you may leave once daily testing is complete.
