How much do petrophysics jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for petrophysics in the United States is $80,287.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $41,500.00 and $103,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Petrophysics position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Petrophysicist, you need a strong background in geology, petrophysics, and reservoir engineering, typically supported by a degree in geosciences or engineering. Proficiency with well log analysis software (such as Schlumberger Techlog or Interactive Petrophysics), data interpretation tools, and familiarity with industry-standard methods are essential. Effective communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work well in multidisciplinary teams set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies ensure accurate reservoir evaluations, efficient collaboration, and successful project outcomes in the oil and gas industry.

What does a Petrophysicist do?

A Petrophysicist analyzes the physical and chemical properties of rocks and their fluid contents, primarily in the oil and gas industry. They interpret well log data, core samples, and seismic information to determine reservoir quality and hydrocarbon potential. Their work helps geologists and engineers make informed decisions about drilling, production, and reservoir management. Petrophysicists use specialized software and tools to evaluate porosity, permeability, and fluid saturation. Their expertise is critical in optimizing resource extraction and maximizing recovery efficiency.

What are some typical daily responsibilities for a Petrophysicist in an oil and gas company?

Petrophysicists spend their day analyzing well log data to evaluate the properties of reservoirs, such as porosity, permeability, and fluid content. They collaborate closely with geologists, reservoir engineers, and drilling teams to integrate data and provide recommendations for exploration and production activities. Daily tasks often include interpreting logging results, generating petrophysical models, preparing technical reports, and presenting findings to interdisciplinary teams. This role requires a strong attention to detail and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Data collection activities includes planning and execution of formation evaluation programs and procedures for coring, wireline logging, data quality control, computer processing, and data management. Strengths include Integration/calibration of core and wireline log data to provide volumetric determination, lithological determination, and mechanical rock properties for horizontal well targeting and 'frac' height estimation. Reservoir characterization expertise for asset valuations is desirable.
Job Requirements
This position requires a minimum of 5+ years of experience performing petrophysical analysis on unconventional resource plays. Desired skillsets include formation evaluation planning; drilling well surveillance, including well disposition; and completion recommendations. Good communication skills and working seamlessly in multi-disciplinary teams is necessary. Capable of mentoring other geoscientists and team members in petrophysical methods and best practices.
A Bachelor's Degree is required in a related field of study such as geology, physics, petroleum engineering or geological engineering. Proficient in use of petrophysical software such as IP and Powerlog is preferred.
