Job description

An exciting career awaits you
At MPC, we're committed to being a great place to work - one that welcomes new ideas, encourages diverse perspectives, develops our people, and fosters a collaborative team environment.
Position Summary:
The Data Analyst supports the Central Support & Predictive Intelligence (CS&PI) team within Marathon Petroleum's Strategy & Business Development (S&BD) organization. This role partners closely with S&BD teams and other business units to deliver decision-grade insights that clarify uncertainty, anticipate risks, and identify opportunities on the most important questions facing the business.
Data Analysts collect, analyze, and synthesize intelligence to guide strategic decisions, with emphasis on Refinery Value Chains or Natural Gas & Natural Gas Liquids value chains in support of MPC/MPLX Portfolio Strategy teams. The role requires a commitment to learning the operations, strategies, and competitive dynamics of the assigned business segment, monitoring external developments, and translating data, often large and unstructured, into clear and actionable insights for stakeholders and senior leadership.
This is an AI-accelerated role. We are looking for analysts who are fluent with data and with the AI tools used to draw insight from it: people who can manipulate, transform, and analyze information using AI, automation, and modern analytical tools to move faster and reach deeper conclusions than traditional analysis allows.
This position will ideally be based in Findlay, OH, but other MPC locations may be considered.
This position is part of a job progression with multiple career levels. Final title and compensation will be based on the successful candidate's overall experience level and qualifications.
Key Responsibilities:
Intelligence & Strategic Analysis
  • Engage regularly with stakeholders to understand business strategies, market disruptors, and emerging trends.
  • Prioritize and respond to intelligence requests from advisors and senior leaders, delivering decision-grade analysis on complex and often ambiguous questions.
  • Research and validate information from multiple sources; monitor external developments, including market, competitive, and regulatory shifts, to identify risks and opportunities.
  • Analyze financial, operational, and industry data to generate insights and recommend actions.
  • Prepare clear, concise, professional reports, briefings, and presentations for business and executive audiences.
  • Support M&A, divestiture, and other special initiatives, including coordinating and managing virtual data rooms so that materials stay organized, access is controlled, and content is current throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Contribute to cross-functional projects across S&BD.

AI, Data & Automation
  • Use AI tools to extract meaningful insights from large, complex, and unstructured datasets.
  • Analyze data from disparate sources, applying statistical and analytical methods to surface patterns, trends, and relationships.
  • Use AI, automation, and modern analytical tools to manipulate and interrogate data, working faster and going deeper than traditional methods allow.
  • Partner on and build automated workflows that improve efficiency across S&BD and accelerate intelligence collection (for example, agentic AI, Power Automate, Copilot, and Python- or SQL-based tooling).
  • Develop and maintain dashboards and visualizations that make data accessible and decision-ready.
  • Identify and pilot new applications of AI and advanced analytics that create value for the team and the broader S&BD organization.

Team Operations
  • As a member of the team, contribute as needed to recurring S&BD processes that support the broader organization, such as budget coordination, subscription and vendor management, and regulatory monitoring.

Qualifications & Skills:
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to synthesize and summarize information from multiple sources.
  • Critical thinking and structured problem-solving, including with incomplete or ambiguous information.
  • Demonstrated data fluency: comfort acquiring, manipulating, and analyzing data, and using AI to extract insights from it.
  • Hands-on experience applying AI-powered tools to real analytical problems, with strong judgment about where and how to use them.
  • Experience with one or more of the following:
    • Workflow automation
    • Data visualization
    • Scripting or query languages
  • Knowledge of, or strong interest in:
    • Market data and outlooks
    • Competitive landscape and financial metrics
    • Refinery Value Chains
    • Natural Gas and NGL value chains

Education & Experience:
  • Required: Bachelor's degree.
  • Preferred fields: Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Data Science, Information Technology, or a related analytical discipline.
  • Experience: 6+ years in an analytical, strategic, commercial, or technical role (ideally in Refining, Midstream, Commercial, Finance, S&BD, or IT).
