What is a Pet Product Design job?

A Pet Product Design job involves creating and developing products specifically for pets, such as toys, beds, feeding accessories, and grooming tools. Designers consider factors like safety, durability, comfort, and aesthetics while also balancing functionality for both pets and their owners. They often collaborate with veterinarians, engineers, and manufacturers to ensure products meet industry standards and consumer needs. This role requires creativity, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of materials and pet behavior trends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Pet Product Design position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Pet Product Design, you need strong skills in product development, materials selection, and animal ergonomics, typically backed by a degree in industrial design or a related field. Proficiency with design software such as CAD, Adobe Creative Suite, and knowledge of prototyping tools is often essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and a passion for both pets and consumer trends help designers stand out. These abilities ensure the creation of safe, functional, and innovative products that meet the needs of both pets and their owners.

What are the main challenges faced by Pet Product Designers in their day-to-day work?

One of the main challenges Pet Product Designers encounter is balancing creativity with practical requirements like safety, durability, and manufacturing costs. Designers must also stay updated on market trends and animal behavior to create products that are both appealing and genuinely beneficial for pets. Collaborating across teams—such as marketing, engineering, and quality assurance—is essential to refine concepts and ensure successful product launches. Meeting tight project deadlines and adapting designs based on user feedback are also common aspects of the role. However, these challenges make the work dynamic and rewarding for those passionate about making a positive difference in the pet industry.

Job description

Job Description:
Our Opportunity
At Chewy, we strive to be the most trusted and convenient online destination for pet parents and our partners - vets and service providers - alike. Our success is measured by the happiness of the people and pets we serve, not simply by the amount of pet supplies we deliver. That's why we continue to think outside the Chewy box to delight, surprise, and thank our loyal pet lovers!
Within our Product Design & Research team, we bring that mission to life by crafting experiences that delight customers and support the businesses and veterinarians who care for pets. We're a team of passionate designers, researchers, and builders who care deeply about our craft-and about pets. We're looking for creative, driven talent to join us and help shape the future of pet care.
You will be a Director, Product Design, leading design within Chewy Health, based in either our Bellevue, WA or Boston, MA offices. This is a high-impact, leadership role guiding the teams designing an integrated suite of services enabling seamless, omni-channel experiences for pet parents, veterinarians, and pharmacists across the full care journey.
You will reinvent how pet care is delivered - designing customer first experiences spanning including physical practices, telemedicine and triage, and prescriptions. Capabilities include: scheduling and managing appointments; in-clinic and virtual interactions with veterinarians and staff; payments and service workflows; medication fulfillment; and post-visit care. This role is ideal for a design leader who thrives in complex, regulated environments and is passionate about bringing consumer-grade experiences to professional and B2B users.
What You'll Do
  • Lead and inspire multiple teams of product designers delivering high-quality, user-centered experiences
  • Define and drive a long-term design vision and strategy focused on delivering Connected Care
  • Influence and shape multi-year product roadmaps
  • Drive innovation through bold, customer-centric thinking
  • Create cohesive, scalable experiences across platforms and devices to deliver business growth
  • Ensure UX excellence, accessibility, and consistency for health and the Chewy ecosystem
  • Partner cross-functionally with product, engineering, research, and business leaders
  • Establish and evolve design processes and operational excellence
  • Build, mentor, and retain a high-performing design team

What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree in design, HCI, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 15+ years of experience in UX/Product Design
  • 10+ years of experience leading design teams including managers
  • Experience in high-growth, complex product environments
  • Proven ability to lead across multiple products or programs
  • Track record of driving operational excellence and building scalable processes
  • Expertise in user interface design, information architecture, interaction design, and user-centered design methodologies
  • Ability to translate data (qualitative + quantitative) into strategic design decisions
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration and influence skills
  • Excellent communication and storytelling abilities across all levels of the organization
  • High judgment, strong analytical thinking, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to bring ideas to life through clear, tangible design concepts

Preferred Qualifications (Bonus)
  • Experience designing complex workflows for customers and expert users
  • Experience delivering multi-channel experiences (web, mobile, in-clinic/POS, etc.)
  • Background in consumer experiences for healthcare or other regulated industries
  • Ability to balance speed, quality, and multiple priorities effectively
  • Hands-on perspective with the ability to dive deep

Work Arrangement:
  • Hybrid Model: 3-4 days in hub location per week
  • Position will require 25-30% travel
  • Remote: This role is NOT remote

The base salary range for this role is $204,500 - $300,000.00.
  • The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate's relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.

We offer different types of insurance and benefits, such as medical/Rx, vision, dental, life, disability, hospital indemnity, critical illness, and accident. We offer parental leave, family services benefits, backup dependent care, flexible spending accounts, telemedicine, pet adoption reimbursement, employee assistance program, and many discounts including 10% off pet insurance and 20% off at Chewy.com.
Exempt salary team members have unlimited PTO, subject to manager approval. Team members will receive six paid holidays per year. Team members may be eligible for paid sick and family leave in compliance with applicable state and local regulations.
