How much do pet daycare jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for pet daycare in the United States is $15.38, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.46 and $17.07 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the requirements to work at a pet daycare?

Pet daycare workers typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and should have a genuine love for animals. Basic knowledge of pet behavior, good communication skills, and the ability to handle multiple animals safely are important; some positions may require certification in pet first aid or animal handling. Prior experience with animals can be beneficial but is not always required for entry-level roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pet daycare worker?

To thrive as a Pet Daycare Worker, you need a strong understanding of animal behavior, basic pet care, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with pet management software, safety protocols, and animal first aid certification is typically valued. Patience, strong communication, and attentiveness to both animals and pet owners set outstanding workers apart. These skills ensure the safety, well-being, and satisfaction of pets and their owners in a busy daycare environment.

What are the most common challenges faced when working in a pet daycare, and how can they be managed?

One of the most common challenges in a pet daycare role is managing the diverse personalities and energy levels of multiple animals at once. It can be demanding to ensure every pet is safe, comfortable, and engaged, especially during busy periods. Effective communication with team members, strong observation skills, and prompt conflict resolution are key to maintaining a harmonious environment. Additionally, understanding animal behavior and responding proactively to signs of stress or aggression helps prevent incidents and ensures a positive experience for both pets and staff.

What is a pet daycare?

A pet daycare is a facility where pets, primarily dogs and sometimes cats, are cared for during the day while their owners are at work or otherwise occupied. These centers provide pets with socialization, exercise, supervision, and basic care such as feeding and potty breaks. Pet daycare staff are trained to monitor animal behavior, ensure safety, and sometimes even provide training or grooming services. It's a great option for pet owners who want to prevent their pets from being lonely or bored during the day. Many pet daycares offer both indoor and outdoor play areas and group pets by size or temperament.

Job description

Job Position: Kennel Assistant / Pet Daycare Assistant (Full-Time or Part-Time).
COMPENSATION:
  • $12 to $16 per hour, commensurate with job-related experience, skills, and training.

BENEFITS:
For non-seasonal, full-time employees only; subject to ongoing availability and plan terms or changes; waiting periods may apply:
  • Competitive benefits package: Includes employer-sponsored MEDICAL, DENTAL, VISION, SHORT-TERM DISABILITY, and TERM LIFE insurance options for eligible employees.
  • Paid time off (PTO).
  • Employee discounts.

WHO WE'RE SEEKING:
For general descriptive purposes only, as actual job duties may vary and are subject to change due to changing business or patient needs, and may include other duties as needed:
  • Experience in a kennel, animal boarding/daycare facility, or veterinary environment is preferred, but not required.
  • Daily tasks include feeding and cleaning up after animals (including dogs, cats, exotic pets, birds, horses, and both large and small farm animals); cleaning kennels and habitats; supervising dogs and other pets during play times; laundry; bathing and grooming dogs and cats; administering medications (including via subcutaneous injection after training); walking and observing dogs outdoors; cleaning cat litter; transporting animals to and from kennels, exam rooms, the lobby, and clients' vehicles; sanitation and janitorial duties throughout the facility, including sweeping, mopping, trash removal, organizing, and general cleaning; observing patients for signs of discomfort or medical concern; frequently documenting observations and work performed in electronic medical records software; immediately informing Veterinarians of suspected medical concerns; etc.
  • Kennel Assistants and Pet Daycare Assistants serve as a second set of eyes for the Veterinarians and other staff. Emerging concerns regarding a patient's health may be noticed first by the Kennel Assistants and Pet Daycare Assistants. Accordingly, Kennel Assistants and Pet Daycare Assistants must have a keen detail orientation, work well both independently and under guidance, and demonstrate initiative in completing daily tasks. Following through on detailed instructions is essential.
  • As key players in ensuring animals are fed and cared for, Kennel Assistants and Pet Daycare Assistants directly contribute to the health, hygiene, and well-being of patients. Since patients rely on Kennel Assistants to attend to their essential needs, punctuality and reliability are essential.
  • Being on our team is fun and rewarding, but requires being a go-getter with tactful client communication skills and high respect for patients, clients, and fellow team members. We value a positive attitude, collaborative spirit, and impeccable ethics. And of course, a love for animals is essential!
