Our client, a well-established manufacturer of electro-mechanical components serving global device and machinery markets, is seeking a Business Development Manager to lead their US subsidiary. Headquartered in Switzerland with a strong international presence, the company has experienced steady, above-average growth since the US operation was founded in 2009 and continues to offer high growth potential through a continuous pipeline of innovative products with unique market positioning.

The successful candidate will take full ownership of the US business, driving commercial growth across the United States, Canada, and Mexico while managing day-to-day operations, financial performance, and a dedicated team of three.

Responsibilities

As Business Development Manager, you will serve as the driving force behind the company's continued growth and development. You will own the full business development lifecycle, lead the company's strategic direction, oversee all operational functions, and be accountable for overall performance and long-term value creation. Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Growth & Business Development: Identify and execute growth opportunities in new markets and applications. Develop market-entry strategies, introduce new products, and establish strategic alliances with channel partners. Represent the company at trade fairs and industry events.
  • Sales & Commercial Leadership: Lead commercial negotiations, contract renewals, and proposal development. Close new business and champion customer feedback internally to influence product direction and service improvements.
  • Marketing & Market Intelligence: Maintain accurate pipeline and forecasts through CRM. Produce account performance reports and business reviews. Monitor competitors, industry trends, and customer needs to shape product and pricing strategy.
  • Operations & Cross-Functional Coordination: Oversee company performance across all functions including sales, marketing, product, and finance. Collaborate closely with headquarters departments including R&D, Engineering, Product Management, Finance, and Quality.
  • Financial Management: Own the P&L, budgeting, forecasting, and monthly financial reporting in partnership with the CFO at headquarters.
  • Key Account Management: Build and maintain senior-level relationships across key customer organizations. Serve as the escalation point for account issues, coordinating internal resources to resolve challenges quickly.
  • Leadership & Culture: Build, mentor, and lead the team. Set the tone for culture, values, and performance expectations. Champion inclusion and ethical behavior across the organization.
  • Strategic Planning: Define and drive the company's US vision, mission, and long-term strategy. Align the organization around strategic priorities and communicate progress to the board, shareholders, and key stakeholders.
  • Technical Support & Troubleshooting: Provide hands-on support for electronic and mechanical product inquiries and troubleshooting as needed.

Requirements

Essential
  • Bachelor's or college degree with 10+ years of professional experience
  • 7+ years in sales as a Key Account Manager, Business Development Manager, or Area Sales Manager
  • Proven track record of identifying and closing deals and hitting revenue/earnings targets
  • Strong negotiation, presentation, and relationship-building skills
  • Experience with CRM systems, enterprise sales processes, and Microsoft Office
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across all levels
  • Willingness to accept and build upon existing structures, processes, and team dynamics
  • Travel 20%+, including 2 to 3 trips per year to the Swiss headquarters
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must reside in or relocate to Hagerstown, MD
  • Fluent in English

  • Degree in Mechatronic Engineering or related technical field
  • Experience in consultative sales of technical components for device and machinery manufacturers
