Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (not to exceed twelve (12) months in duration from date of hire), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai'i at Hilo (UHH), Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV), located in Hilo, Hawai'i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $5,000 - $5,572/Mon.
DUTIES: Works with the staff of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to: conduct routine testing and trouble-shooting of field instruments; perform regular maintenance of field scientific stations as well as needed repairs; assist with the construction of new field stations (environmental enclosures, towers, transmitter antennas, power supplies, etc.); design/fabricate/assemble replacement and new instrumentation for field deployment; perform needed maintenance to ensure access and functionality of remote field stations; assist gas geochemistry team with maintenance and servicing of their monitoring network and assist them with data collection and processing as needed. Maintains and troubleshoots field array instruments and services and maintains stations. Organizes various data into the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) file system. Participates in campaign surveys and deployments of gas monitoring instrumentation in the field.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Geology, Chemistry, or Earth Sciences or a related field with coursework in at least two of the three Geology, Chemistry, or Earth Sciences disciplines.
EXPERIENCE One to three (1-3) years of experience working scientific instrumentation, monitoring instrumentation, or repair and maintenance of gas geochemistry monitoring arrays and working in remote locations in a rugged volcanic environment.
KNOWLEDGE Basic knowledge and understanding of the fundamental processes being monitored on an active volcano and the necessary operating parameters of a range of monitoring instrumentation currently in use at Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Knowledge of gas monitoring instrumentation, basic electronics, electrical instruments, and electrical testing tools. Knowledge of health and safety practices when working in volcanic gas-rich environments.
ABILITIES & SKILLS Basic ability to use standard instrument testing tools to diagnose failure of malfunction. Proficient in office software, and database software. Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai'i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS Must be able to work effectively at altitudes of up to 13,000 feet for periods of up to several days. Must be able to walk long distances over rough, irregular, and uneven terrain, around active lava flows and vents. Requires wear and use of respirator in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements. Must be able to carry a pack which weighs up to forty (40) pounds. Post Offer/Employment Condition : Must be able to pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination and respiratory test for use of respirators. Must be able to complete USGS aviation and safety training within three (3) months from date of hire. Must complete respirator training prior to use of respirator.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Prior experience working at high elevations and familiarity with adverse environmental/field conditions and challenges while working in remote locations. Knowledge of Hawaiian volcanism and the processes occurring therein and field risks associated with working on an active volcano.
