What is a personal assistant?

The job of a personal assistant is to meet the needs of the client. Personal assistants can work in a business context, assist with personal tasks, or help with a combination of both business and personal tasks. A personal assistant may be required to make phone calls, write emails, organize schedules, run errands, and make appointments. Job duties may also include making travel arrangements, completing expense reporting, acting as a liaison with other staff, and managing special projects.

Job description

Executive Personal Assistant
Toledo, Ohio | Hybrid | Local Candidates Only
Full-Time, Non-Exempt | $30-$37/hour

A high-trust role for someone who sees the details,
understands the bigger picture, and knows how to keep things moving.

Who You'll Support

In this role, you will support Michael Leizerman, founding partner of The Law Firm for Truck Safety.

Michael's work spans law firm leadership, catastrophic truck crash litigation, writing, speaking, nonprofit and foundation service, professional education, safety advocacy, and special projects. He is a nationally recognized trucking litigation attorney, frequent speaker, and writer, co-founder of the Academy of Truck Accident Attorneys, and the author of a leading treatise on trucking litigation.

He also leads professional and nonprofit initiatives outside the day-to-day practice of law, including The Zen Lawyer Workshop & Retreat and related writing, speaking, and educational projects focused on lawyer well-being, education, and professional development.

The Role

Supporting Michael's work at The Law Firm for Truck Safety is a major part of this role. The firm represents families whose lives have been changed by catastrophic commercial truck crashes and works to improve roadway safety through litigation, advocacy, and industry leadership.

However, this is not a legal professional role, and it is not intended to involve client-facing work or direct matter management. Instead, you will work alongside members of a collaborative, mission-driven team, as well as Michael's broader professional network, to help coordinate schedules, communications, priorities, logistics, special projects, and follow-through on Michael's leadership and professional commitments.

This position is broader than traditional administrative support and extends beyond the law firm. You will help manage the day-to-day details of Michael's professional and personal life across a wide range of commitments, projects, organizations, and priorities. This is a long-term opportunity for someone who enjoys managing complexity, solving problems independently, and helping bring structure and clarity to meaningful work.

The Work

This is a fast-paced, high-trust role that requires attention to detail, strong organization, clear communication, and sound judgment. You will support a full professional and personal life with many moving pieces, bringing reliability and continuity to day-to-day responsibilities.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Managing a complex executive calendar, email correspondence, communications, priorities, and follow-ups
  • Supporting writing, publishing, speaking, marketing, and content-related commitments, including Substack publishing, social media monitoring, and the daily "Tip of the Day" video series
  • Coordinating speaking engagements, interviews, publicity-related scheduling, materials, deadlines, and related logistics
  • Arranging travel for Michael and, at times, his wife and law partner, Rena, including transportation, lodging, dining, meeting coordination, and contingency planning
  • Planning events from concept through completion, including venues, vendors, catering, budgets, guest details, and on-site logistics
  • Coordinating seasonal residence logistics at Chautauqua Institution, including event tickets, guest calendars, guest communications, and related details
  • Communicating with vendors, personal staff, household contacts, property contacts, and trusted advisors, as needed
  • Providing administrative support for Michael's nonprofit, foundation, board, and professional education responsibilities
  • Tracking professional licensing, CLE deadlines, credits, submissions, and related requirements
  • Assisting with physical mailings, direct mail assembly, occasional local errands, and special projects

About You

The right person doesn't need every day to look the same. In fact, you'll probably thrive on the variety, pace, and opportunity to solve different challenges each day.

You are highly organized, discreet, resourceful, and calm under pressure. You can see the big picture while keeping track of the details. You know how to protect priorities, communicate clearly, and exercise sound judgment in a role that touches professional, nonprofit, financial, and personal matters.

You do not need to be a lawyer, but you do need to be someone who brings clarity, reliability, initiative, and follow-through to complex work. You enjoy anticipating needs, solving problems before they become issues, and helping things run smoothly behind the scenes.

At minimum, we are looking for someone with:

  • At least three years of experience supporting a senior executive, business owner, attorney, professional, or similarly active individual in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally on someone else's behalf
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize competing demands without constant direction
  • Sound judgment, professionalism, discretion, and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality, including a willingness to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement
  • Tech-savvy and comfortable using modern productivity tools, including Microsoft 365, Adobe Acrobat Pro or similar PDF software, and AI tools, to improve organization, drafting, scheduling, task management, and follow-through
  • An associate's or bachelor's degree is preferred, but equivalent experience will be considered.

How We Support You

This position pays $30-$37 per hour, with room for growth as responsibilities expand and the working relationship develops.

In addition to your earnings, we offer comprehensive health coverage, including medical, dental, vision, and ancillary benefits, along with an employer-sponsored retirement plan with company match, paid time off, holidays, and sick leave.

This is a hybrid position based in Toledo, Ohio. Because of the nature of the role, we are only considering local candidates. Some in-office time is required, along with occasional local errands and logistics between the office, Michael's home, vendors, events, and other Toledo-area locations. When in-person support is not needed, work may be performed from the office, from home, or from another suitable location where you can stay focused, responsive, and effective.

If you enjoy bringing order to complexity, helping important work move forward, and becoming a trusted partner in a high-impact role, we would love to hear from you.

How to Apply

Along with your resume, please include a brief note describing a complex project, event, schedule, or set of logistics you've managed. What made it complex? How did you approach it? How did you keep everything organized and moving forward?

We'll review both your resume and your note carefully because strong communication, sound judgment, and the ability to bring order to complexity are essential to success in this role.
